    Summary

When Ishmael angsts over never having kissed his bosom friend Queequeg, the crew of the Pequod rally around his increasingly desperate efforts, serving up a cavalcade of romcom clichés in their misguided attempts to find Ishmael his happily ever after. They’re serious about putting romcom back into Romanticism—and if there ain’t no extravagant musical number sung in the shadow of a breaching whale, then by Neptune it ain’t love.

Ahahaha you are completely insane and I loved this. If only Melville had written Moby-Dick as the rom-com it was clearly meant to be, I would not have abandoned it a quarter of the way through when my eyes glazed over. I died at the swatch samples, was resurrected by the ridiculous song (That’s quite a harpoon! So, call me— “Ishmael!” Queequeg shouted was pure maniacal genius!) and then I died again at “Coffee. Starbuck’s. Flat white” and I am writing this from the afterlife.

    Summary

The first time they met, they were both twenty-two and doing research on World War II.

The second time they met, Ann was in her forties but Colin was only twenty-seven, so he managed to convince her he wasn't the historian she'd known nineteen years earlier.

The third time they met, she wasn't so easily deceived.

This is really great! I love seeing Ann twig to the mystery of Connor/Calvin and yay, Colin tells her about time travel! And I especially adore that it's in the context of attempting to prevent a known death and (apparently) succeeding, which adds depth to the story - not to mention Polly's hilarious account of choir practice shenanigans! The whole thing feels very real and also very in keeping with canon. Well done!

AHAHAHA THE SCOTTISH PLAY! (No, not that one...) This is an inspired crossover and it made me giggle. I especially loved that Geoffrey's related to David Tennant (and I can't believe this is the first time anyone thought of that!), and Darren in Brussels directing a production of Cats with all of the characters played by actual cats because OF COURSE HE IS. And oh, what a perfect epigraph, or perhaps epitaph:

“For never was a story of more woe,” he says sadly, “than this of Albus Sev, and his Scorpio.”

    I laughed! Well done!

This is really nice. I like the descriptions, the sensory details: the look and feel and smell of things in the small cabin, and especially the focus on the needlework. I think it's appropriate and lovely that the story focuses on a traditional women's task, and uses the fineness of Wanda's knitting almost as a metaphor for her growth as a person. I watched Wanda’s fingers pull and tug and weave the wool until I could almost feel the sureness of their touch on my own skin. It was a pattern, to be sure, but also a mystery; the strands of yarn merging into the growing shawl were a path I followed, lulled by their twining. How subtle and beautiful!
