Summary
During the prison escape, Dream and Ranboo both dive underwater to avoid capture. They didn’t count on accidentally finding portal and being transported to a world completely different from the SMP. They soon learn they have a lot of world-hopping to do to get home—and to survive, they'll have to (very reluctantly) work together.Dream slides his face into his hands.
“Damnit Ranboo,” he hisses. “Where the fuck are we?”
“How am I supposed to know?” Ranboo snaps back.
Meanwhile, the rest of the SMP freak out and start pointing fingers. Tommy is not amused by the possibility of another war, so this time he takes matters into his own hands.

“You know, Tommy.” Techno coughs out another splatter of blood. “I don’t know if I’ve said this before, but I do think you’re a very good brother. The best brother.” Another pause. “Don’t tell Wilbur I said that, though.”
“That’s great,” Tommy says impatiently. “But I’d like you to drink this health potion before you fucking die, please.”

“What, jealous?” Tommy shoots back. “I know being here is a lot to take in, Dream. It’s okay—homelessness is a very common and serious issue we need to take decisive action on-”
“What—first of all,” Dream says, advancing forward slowly, “I have a house—”
“Whatever you say, pussy-ass bitch—”
“And second of all, why is there a random fucking child in Technoblade’s house?”
Tommy bristles. “I am not a child, you fucker - I’m fifteen, I can drink more than your weight in vodka-”
“I didn’t know Technoblade was in a kidnapping business,” Dream repeats, like he hadn’t heard Tommy the first time. Fucking bitch.

He names himself Soot because he is born in fire.
Perhaps not his literal birth, but he has only vague impressions of a life before the searing heat and orange of lava and though his best estimate of his age says he has been around a couple decades, he looks at the burn scars covering his neck and everything below and the ashy colors of his wings and decides birth and rebirth are close enough synonyms, anyway.
So he calls himself Soot, particles left by incomplete combustion, because he was meant to die in lava- and perhaps part of him did, the person he was with his memories, and now Soot is what’s left.

or, after a lava death that leaves him both physically and mentally scarred, wilbur loses his memory due to the traumatic nature of the sky gods' trials. released back into a world he doesn't remember, he finds himself caught up in a revolution against the antarctic empire- the leaders of which seem familiar in a way he can't place.

Or: Phil becomes a foster father after an emergency call from Wilbur's caseworker. He's been through a lot, but dammit, Phil's son is safe now — and his family can only grow from there.
