“Your hair,” Nicolò says, shirtless and sitting on the bed of their rented room. “You, ah – when I pull your hair…”

Yusuf flushes red. “Yes,” he says.

“May I do it more?” Nicolò asks.

Yusuf would mistake his question for idle curiosity if there were just a hint less gravel in his tone and a bit less pupil in his eyes.

In all his centuries, in all his deaths, you would think Joe would be used to being killed in a variety of horrifying ways. But something about this latest one…the dispassionate way Keane looked down at him, the unnecessary intimacy and brutality of the act…it still causes tremors through Joe’s being even days later.

    Summary

Joe’s talked about his family before, about how places, buildings, landmarks have changed, but Nile’s never had an opportunity to ask him so specifically: “Is there anything you remember about your home?”

“My home. My first home? Yes. Not the whole configuration, but the sensory impression. Saffron, cumin, harissa; they all smell and taste like home. Adhan, the sound of the call to prayer. Patterns,” he gestures to the museum display case that contains a clay dish from the 11th century, painted in shades of cream and brown. “I carry them in my mind and my heart, alongside all the homes since then.”
