    Summary

The second name on the door read ‘L. Jones, Mage’, and George raised a cautioiusly curious eyebrow. She knew an L. Jones who had sparks spilling from his fingers and his lips, but he was weeks of travel away and had a certain scoffing disrespect for the Academy. to be fair, so did she, but here she was. She knocked politely, and gently pushed the door open when there was no response. The room was empty - evidently her new roommate was out - but it was clear which half of the room was occupied. George didn’t have much with her, so wound up lying on her well worn bedroll staring at the ceiling. She sort of felt like she should go to the Library, bury herself in books, but there was a kind of tightness in her chest she had to remind herself how to breathe through first.

She was still remembering to breathe when the door clicked open. George sat up and twisted, and her breath caught in her throat all over again.

“Hi. I’m Laney Jones,” the tall, dark skinned girl smiled politely, precisely, “and you must be Georgiana - I met Rupert in the quad.”

    “Just Ana, please.”

“Ana? Okay. Well, pleased to meet you, Ana Jones.”

(Observation #1: her smile is something practised)

    Summary

Grey rubbed his nose thoughtfully, spreading ink over its already ink-stained tip, staring absently at the bottom of the empty bunk above him. Laney, though to all appearances deeply buried in the page of notes she was reviewing ahead of her end of year exams at Jack’s unused desk, flicked an eyebrow up a curious, restrained inch.

“What’s on your mind, pipsqueak?” Grey blinked.
    “Um…lots of things? I’m a sage.”

    Summary

In the last year of his life, Jack Farris had shot up tall. Bea had rolled her eyes when he asked for the sewing kit so he could (inexpertly) lengthen the hems of his trousers yet again and declared his mother must have kicked him out from home because she knew this endless need for new clothes was coming. Jack grinned at her and had crooked hems until the next growth spurt hit (then slightly less crooked ones, because he had more practice, now). He’d hit his head on branches he had once scurried beneath and found the stash of snow cookies on the shelf that had previously been safely out of sight. He had complained when he noticed them, loud and laughing, that he wasn’t a kid you had to hide treats from. Liam had laughed back and told him 'yeah you are, Farris', only mostly joking.

He’d been growing tall, by the end - by the end there had been so much of him to fall, to hit the ground in accelerated slow motion. Falling was the bravest thing Liam had ever known, and Jack had always been so very brave.

The Rivertown streets were rough, uneven mud, tramping dust into buildings in summer and squelching underfoot in winter (and any other time it rained). Sez knew them better than her own heartbeat, these alleyways and ramshackle homes, and Sally knew Sez’s heart almost as well as her own.

    Summary

Somehow she always forgot how much brighter and closer the stars were out in the desert, whenever she travelled elsewhere. When dusk fell and the moon rose, looking close enough to walk right up to, her heart gave a warm little twist of homecoming - home wasn’t a place, it was something she carried in herself, wherever she planted her feet, but these shifting sands were the steadiest place she knew.

The engine in her battered truck had broken down yet again, but Miz Eliza considered that a problem for later. For now she sat on the cooling roof and mapped stories into the lights and spaces in the sky.

    Summary

Francis Uyeda walked through the Academy’s hated gates when he was eighteen, because there was something here worth saving from itself. His mother’s face had been stern and calm on the dockside, and when she kissed his forehead and wished him luck he could see her folding in and in on herself. One of the younger kids had been crying. One of his sisters had stubbornly refused to speak to him since he sent off the forms, and another had done the same once his acceptance had come back. His brother had made him promise to say hi to the Rangers.

He had lived most of his life on a ship, and now the ground lay still beneath his feet. He braced himself against it and stumbled when he adjusted his balance thoughtlessly for a shift that wasn’t coming. The ground was still, stable, and he felt off balance for weeks.

The threads looked as though they would slip away from George’s fingers at any moment. They hadn’t used to; once upon a time they had coiled around her left fingertips to merge with the creases of her palms, just like - so far as she’d heard - everybody else’s.

For some reason, the disgusting, battered couch Leaf insisted on keeping is occupied more often than it is not. Red is quietly horrified and has fond dreams of lopping the thing up for probably toxic firewood. Leaf looks at him like he just kicked a puppy whenever he suggests it. It’s a practiced look, and Red is almost certain his boyfriend is messing with him, but he doesn’t destroy the sofa anyway.

    Summary

Jack wasn’t the first to think that Leaf’s armband was as green as his name only because of where he was from, not who he was. Most of the stable-loft crew had assumed he was a wannabe combat spec, and once or twice he’d been mistaken for a denied hero (he’d laughed so hard he fell off a chair when Gloria told him she’d thought for a while he’d wanted the purple badge, to be leading the charge; he fell into directing people so easily when the battle for Driftwood island came, she’d said, and he grinned and asked her if she’d like to go tell Nurse to her face that healers weren’t allowed to give instructions like they were supposed to be followed)

    Summary

When Rupert Hammersfield the Seventh was declared missing, presumed dead, Rhones stepped quietly into his role as general support to the headmaster, who had gone grey and grim with grief. The piles of extra paperwork on his desk were not welcome, but Rhones was used to gritting his teeth and getting on with the job that needed doing - hard rides through heavy rain to answer summons, striding into a nest of Things, shaking the hands of young heroes when they graduated and set out on their first League duty, knowing some of them would never come home again.

    - A character piece for Rhones, ft. Tessa "Terence" Farris.

    Summary

The desert came into view slowly - she walked the last day, feet still aching, though less than they had when she first set out, blisters grown slowly to callus. Her first sight of the true desert expanse was a shimmer of gold on the horizon. When she was far enough along the road to be surrounded by lone dunes she paused. Cass had always seen the world in shifting swirls of gold, and here so did everyone else. She scooped sand up, surprised that under the scorching surface the grains were cool to the touch. She let it trickle softly through her fingers and drift in the wind. If she were a more fanciful person she might have thought it was a golden trail leading her somewhere new.

    Summary

Bidi Jones grew up knowing that people will walk through your door, once, and walk back out never to return, all in the space of a day. She didn't remember most of them, faces blurring together. But she had an old crayon scribble of herself wreathed in gold pinned to her wall until the bakery went up in smoke. She remembered a child telling her shyly it was pretty, sparkly, that it looked a little like scales dusted over her skin - she remembered that because she was already half in love with dragons, and it had made her grin.
