When Merlin first started working for Arthur, he had naively thought Arthur was straight. They worked in an LGBT support organization, but Merlin had given Arthur one look and thought ‘Gorgeous, but straight.’ Of course, he should have known that Annis would not have hired a straight man to head the department of networking. Arthur was more or less the face of the organization when it came to partnerships and sponsorships. Merlin had only made the discovery when he saw the sole personal picture on Arthur’s desk, a snapshot of a group of friends at Pride with Arthur smack in the middle: shirtless, chest painted with sparkling glitter, and a huge sign that read ‘Gay As Hell’ with rainbow flames around the lettering. At the time, it had seemed so out-of-character that Merlin had burst out laughing and immediately cherished this glitterized version of Arthur. Ever since, Merlin had cherished the bits and pieces of that version of Arthur whenever he let that side of him show.

Arthur is seven years old when he takes a sharpened blade from the armoury and stabs Merlin with it.
Arthur and Merlin's relationship from childhood onwards.
The last thing Merlin expected to happen on his first day of uni was saving a life of a blond prat. The same blond prat that laughed at him not two hours ago when he tripped over a stair and spilled his freshly borrowed books all over the hallway floor. Yes, he helped pick them up, but only after his friend started, and he didn’t forget to slip in a joke about Merlin’s ears in the process.
For every achievement, good or bad, one earns a mark on their body. Merlin realises very quickly that this might be a problem when you’re the personal servant, and close friend of Arthur Pendragon – especially when you have to save the damn prat every other day from a magical monster or evil plot.
Merlin was squinting at him, concentrating very hard. Arthur waited for him to say whatever it was he was thinking so hard about.
What he finally got was, “Fight me.”
Arthur was hard-pressed not to laugh out loud. Merlin looked so determined, his chin up and eyes narrowed, but he was obviously still high as balls.
