    Lucifer was an angel once.

That’s what Nursey thinks, the first time he sees William Poindexter.

Because the boy is beautiful even though he shouldn’t be. Even though he’s doubtless the kind of person who would punch you in the face if you said the words “you” and “beautiful” to him in the same sentence.

His skin is choked with freckles. It’s potentially more freckle than skin. Not just his face, where his nose and cheekbones are so hyper-pigmented they look tanned, but his collarbones and forearms and knuckles. The close-shaved dark ginger stubble of his hair should make his ears look too big or his mouth too wide but instead it accentuates the long curve of his throat, the cup of velvet skin between the tendons in the back of his neck.

“You’re the new defenseman?” Nursey asks. “William Poindexter?”

And the boy turns around and considers him with what might be contempt but what might just be the way his face looks and says, “Yeah?” like its a challenge.

    And Nursey thinks:

    Oh no.

Sid was smiling at her. He was a nice guy. He was trying. He had brought her flowers. He wanted her to like him, and Anya wanted to like him, she wanted everything to work out, for Zhenya to be happy, and for her and Sid to get along. She thought they probably would. Zhenya loved him for a reason.

“Of course,” she said. She believed it then, watching his smile. “I think we’ll be friends.”

In which Jack doesn't find the courage to confess his love at graduation and Bitty only complicates things by becoming the first out player in the NHL.

    ________

In the end, it’s pretty anticlimactic. The Falcs are defending divisional champions and the Schooners are coming out of an extremely rough rebuild year with the third worst record in the league. Providence pulls out a 3-1 win in regulation, the only Seattle goal belonging to Eric; a gorgeous snipe in the third that had Jack reflexively cheering from the Falconers bench — something Jack knows immediately will be a highlight more vaulted than the goal itself.

At the end of regulation, Jack hangs back to catch Bittle before he's ushered off the ice, pulling him into a tight hug that makes the remaining Schooners fans go wild. “Good game, Bits,” he knocks his helmet against Bittle’s and tries to ignore the immediate camera flashes. This was always the plan: two marketing departments eager to dominate the news cycle; It isn't hard to fake enthusiasm because right now Eric Bittle is a perfect amalgamation of Jack’s two favorite things in the whole world: hockey and handsome blondes.

    “Great game, Jack,” Bitty laughs.

    Summary

Kent Parson wakes up the day after Cup Day in bed with a stranger. He's expecting to have hooked up with a Jack Zimmermann look-a-like. He is not expecting to see Jack Zimmermann’s boyfriend sound asleep beside him, dressed in what looks like one of his old Aces’ jerseys and nothing else.

Kent stares. And stares. And stares some more. Completely eloquently, for the third time that morning, he says, “What the fuck.”

    --

Or, Kent Parson swaps places with an alternate version of himself who happens to be madly in love with one Eric R. Bittle. It goes about as well as you'd expect.
