Summary
‘I’m Katara, by the way. 12B.’
‘Zuko. 12A.’
‘You don’t say much.’
He shrugs. No, he doesn’t. Not anymore. He has less than nothing of value to say, why bother wasting anyone’s time with it?
-
Zuko has made some life shattering mistakes. Recently sober for the first time since he dropped out of high school, he finally has a chance to make something of this life— if he can just choose to live it. Katara has never felt more alone. She’s weeks away from receiving her degree, already crafting her cover letter for the job she’s been working towards for five years… but life feels empty without her friends and family.
Lonely, and with a shared balcony and interest in tea and gardening, they help carry each other’s burdens and learn something along the way.

Summary
‘Is there something you need?’ he asks, more sharply than he intends. He’s so tried…
Katara eyes him like he’s an animal, a wild thing she’s trying to ease into domestication. ‘The opposite, actually.’ She uncrosses her legs, leans forward in her chair and those tight blue eyes— full and ambivalent and certain all at once— get his full attention. ‘What if I did it? What if we did?’
‘What if we did what?’
Her cheeks are ruddy, her braid messy as though she’s spent too long anxiously fiddling with it. ‘Date. Court. Whatever you call it.’
Zuko blinks, repeats her words back to himself once twice, trying to make sense of them. No good; his brain is scrambled. ‘What…? What are you talking about?’
‘Sokka’s plan,’ she says slowly, frowning at him. ‘I’ve been thinking about it. It’s sound in theory, he just had the wrong girl in mind.’
‘Sokka’s…’ Zuko wet his lips. ‘You think we should play out Sokka’s plan?’
‘Yes.’
Agni’s four hells…

Summary
At the funeral, Katara doesn’t dress in white. It causes a scandal or would do if her belly wasn’t round with the Fire Nation’s future. She doesn’t look away from the pyre, not even when the prayers tapper out, smoke rises, and the Firelord’s crown is placed in her top knot.
She kneels to receive Zuko’s crown and his child kicks, blissfully ignorant within her.
She wears black and navy robes, charcoal smeared over her eyes and forehead so that when she finally— finally— is out of the public eye and can burst into tears, she tastes salt and fire as the charcoal paste runs over her lips and stains her tongue.

Summary
"She takes his hand, turns it palm up and drops the ankh charm there. ‘When a symbol calls to you, you should never ignore it. There are forces in this world stronger than thoughts; you would be wise to let them guide you from time to time.’
That makes him furrow his brow. ‘Forces? You mean like magic?’
‘Maybe.’
‘I don’t believe in magic.’
‘I know.’ She winks at him and turns back to the oven, fishing a tea towel from her apron pocket. With the ease of one who has done so a thousand times before, she slides a tray of golden brown sourdough free and sets it on the cooling shelf.
No, he doesn’t believe in magic, but there is something about her… And that, he believes in."
-
Running his uncle's bakery is stranger than Zuko could have expected, especially when the woman he hires to share the workload speaks in a long dead language, conflates science and magic, and knows more about him than she has any right to.

Summary
there are tiny moments, shards of life, that brought us here. in our dreams we see them all, we see what isn't.
we see what we're left with.
we see now.
a shame, then, that we will forget this too.

He thinks it began the night a fire blazed across the sky.

Summary
“Take my hand,” Zuko murmurs. He draws her closer, so close Katara can feel the heat radiating from his body through the fine silks they wear. “If we were truly courting, you would not be so far away.”
“If we were truly courting, I would dunk you in that ornamental koi pond for such impudence,” Katara remarks dryly. “You do not truly believe a mere dance will be enough to convince everyone of our epic burgeoning love?”
Zuko only smiles at her, and it’s a smile Katara has never seen — small and sharp and wicked bright, making an odd thud reverberate through her chest. “Depends on the dance.”
_It’s been five years since the end of the war.
The Fire Nation is calling for Zuko to marry. Zuko just wants to focus on fixing his country and for strangers to stop touching him like they were staking a claim.
Katara turned down Aang's proposal a year ago, yet he and everyone else expect her to see sense and settle for her happy ending. Katara only wants to find her own path and for Aang to stop treating her like she's still his.
A fake courtship between friends seems like the perfect solution. What could they possibly have to lose? -

Summary
Her voice is a lullaby. A storm. Something that terrifies Zuko and astounds him and calms him. Both the cut and the balm, the song of his heart is as much of a tragedy as it is a triumph. So beautiful it’s terrible.
Now a fugitive of his own nation, Zuko will spend the rest of his days avoiding capture on the sea. He falls in love with a siren and her song, forever searching for her in the temperamental ocean that he now calls home.
