“I want to see if you live up to your tales,” young Thor says with a grin, trying to goad him. He tosses Mjolnir up into the air – inside the palace, no wonder Thor gave his mother conniptions - and summons it back again, and in that split second Thor can feel it calling to him as well.

It is a song he knows so well. It thrums in his blood, the call of the power that is his birthright. That he earned and bled and killed for.

    Summary

“Paperwork for the new head of Q-Branch,” Tanner said.

“Of course.” The words were like glass in his throat. Smoke inhalation was a bitch. His brain felt slow and foggy, like it was full of smoke too. “Who shall I take them to?”

M lifted one white brow. “They’re for you, Quartermaster.”

Bond and Q are drawn together by names, work, and a certain Aston Martin. In which Q is kidnapped once, Bond is poisoned twice, and Eve is a badass on at least three occasions. AKA that time I tripped and wrote 80,000 words of 00Q.

All titles unapologetically stolen from Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

M’s gaze was steady. “We need to get up and running as soon as possible, so after you sign these, Tanner will take you down to temporary Q-Branch so you can tell him what needs doing. Those suggestions you made two months ago? They’re a good start, but we’ll need more than that. I think I don’t need to tell you that we can’t allow what happened at HQ to happen again.”

The Quartermaster -- the previous Quartermaster’s blank eyes swam in front of him, like the specter at a grim feast. “Ma’am, I -- I’m not... Surely someone more senior--”

“Seniority is no guarantee of efficiency, and efficiency is what we need.” M didn’t stand up, but she still seemed to be a towering presence. He felt her words like they were an iron bar being strapped to his spine. “We are facing a new kind of threat, and we need to move fast to counter it. I need a Quartermaster who understands that threat -- who else could possibly do that better than the man who pointed out this very vulnerability two months ago?”

“I’m… due respect ma’am, but I’m not -- I’m not ready to say--”

M looked positively affronted by this. “I don’t give a damn if you’re ready. You are needed."

Winona spends her nights looking up at the stars.

There’s something about them, something almost physically perceptible, that pulls her in, calls her out into the beautiful, endless beyond. Into the infinite What Could Be and away from the ugly, painful What Is.

Maybe it’s how the stars look down on human emotions, human endeavors, human humanity and it never fazes them. They remain untouched by all, impassive, impregnably beautiful. A perfect contrast to the human, who is touched and molded and hurt by everything. Maybe it’s the magnetic attraction of opposite poles that pulls her.

Winona looks up and sees Jim sitting on the roof, staring at the same stars, and she knows that theirs were never difficulties of difference, but the magnetic repulsion of too-similar poles.
