The compartment door slid open a crack and a tan-skinned face peeked in. Finding the place practically empty, the young boy opened the door the rest of the way and stepped past the threshold. His eyes were blue like the ocean with flecks of grey and white, his hair the color of coffee and kept relatively close to his skull. The hints of freckles could be seen along his nose; and when he smiled shyly, one dimple showing itself in his left cheek, Keith felt his heart flutter at the sight.
“Hi, can I maybe sit with you, please? My friends aren’t on the train yet, but they’re really nice.”
Keith blinked at the boy before nodding his head. “Sure, there’s plenty of room.”
The boy beamed at that, shuffling inside with a small owl cage in one hand, closing the compartment back up with his other. “I’m Lance, by the way. Lance McClain. What’s your name?”
“I’m Keith Kogane. Nice to meet you, Lance.”

Another scrap of parchment shot out of the cup, a fourth scrap of parchment, which made no sense at all, and the Headmaster grabbed it from the air, unrolling it and reading it quietly.
The entirety of the Great Hall remained silent. It was as quiet as a tomb.
“Lance Álvarez?” The Headmaster whispered, and then again, louder. “Lance Álvarez.”
// Lance and Keith have always been battling it out: on the Quidditch field, in the duelling club, for the best marks in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Keith always manages to come out in the lead.
Now, the Triwizard Tournament has been announced and Lance knows that Keith is going to beat him for the only open spot, even if he pretends that he thinks otherwise. But it doesn’t quite go the way that Lance expects, and everything changes from there.

Fear clambers into his mouth and tastes bitter on his tongue. “Who are you?” It takes him a moment to register the sound of his own voice.
She stares at him. Blinks. “Lance, please, this isn’t time for one of your jokes--”
He furrows his eyebrows and struggles to sit up, to stop leaning into the cradle of her arms. “I’m not--I’m not...joking.”
After sacrificing himself to save Allura, Lance wakes up in a strange new world where the only thing he knows is a deep connection to a boy he doesn't remember.
"Oh good, you're all here!" Shiro greets, walking out of the front double doors of the campus with a wide grin.
Everyone waves but Keith, who crosses his arms over his chest, "What kind of setup is this?"
"You know, Keith, most people say hi before they accuse people of things," Lance offers with a sigh.
"No, he's right, this was a setup."
Three years after the end of the war, Shiro makes his way to Lance's family's farm and offers Lance an opportunity to be an instructor at the Garrison. Although he's never taught before, Lance learns about grief, love and what it means to heal.
On the morning of their first summer back on Earth, Lance receives a gift of sunflowers. A confession, a rejection, and the passage of time, all leading to the one person who's always been there for him.
