“I was hoping… friends would be enough,” Ibushi said slowly, his gaze filtering back over to Kinshiro and Atsushi- still lost in their own little world, although it included Akoya, Ryuu and Io by that point, the group of them laughing about something or another, the rest oblivious to the way Atsushi’s hand lingered on Kinshiro’s waist. Ibushi didn’t seem to be able to look away. “He didn’t have many- any, aside from us- and I thought… what could the harm be? It would make him happy. So I encouraged it… and before I knew it-”
“You’d lost your chance,” En finished the thought. He also couldn’t tear his eyes away from Atsushi’s fingertips. Next to him, Ibushi sighed.
“You’re the same, aren’t you?”
“…he really missed him.”
“But you miss him.”
“I have him… friends… can be enough.”----
En and Ibushi find each other in the ashes of their lost loves- and under the mistletoe.

It seemed to En that despite the fact that his body seemed to react to the spices, he almost enjoyed the sensations, huddling over his food like he hadn’t eaten in years. Their curry wasn’t that good. They hadn’t won any awards nor did they get particularly very much foot traffic even when the University was in session, but it didn’t seem to make any difference to him. That skinny, bespectacled boy always left with rosy cheeks, a runny nose and a smile that warmed En to his toes. And of course, there was always a little bit of steam left smudging his lenses.

It was all for a show, but how else could the people on Wombat's planet see which heirs lost their right to the throne? How else could they decide which knight to vote for to gain the right to stand at the emperor's court?
Only now the current emperor has had enough. For too long he's been away from his home. So if that means personally 'preparing' the two final heirs, and making sure the knight gets proper training, then so be it. After all, it's all in the name of of love.
