It’s a special day because of the floating lights. They appear in the sky every year on her birthday — only on her birthday — and that’s the only outer world thing she can keep track of besides seasons changing.
The outer world, you see, is very dangerous. Her mother tells her that there are poison ivy, quicksand, cannibals and snakes there. Oh, and the plague. Never forget about the plague.
Her mother loves her so much that she won’t let her leave her tower, so she’s lived there her whole life. She spends her days painting, cooking, cleaning, and reading while wondering how much she wants her life to really begin.
She just wants to get out of the tower. She just wants to be free.
