real feel good found family vibes from this one
For spring term 2019, Hob sets his students an assignment. The guidelines are purposely vague, the subject broad. They are to write an essay on any historical period, event, figure, or phenomena of their choosing. One assignment in particular catches his eye.
A Brief History of the Occult in Britain.
Hob sets about reading.

Finding out that your professor is a human, with ties and an actual life beyond the classroom is always a little jarring for students.
For the university students in Professor Hob Gadling's history class? It's practically life changing.
Now, if only they could figure out who this mystery man is.
Morpheus’s expression melts into unreadability. “Would you have come to my rescue again, Hob Gadling?”
“Yes. God, yes, I would have. Of course, I would have."
“An Endless?” Hob asks, softly, because it feels like a question that needs to be soft.
“That’s what we are,” Death responds, trying again for a small smile. “Me and D—”
“Don’t,” Hob interrupts, far stronger than he meant to, and Death looks surprised for as long as it takes him to get out, “Don’t, please. I-I want to hear it from him.”
Sympathy colors Death’s gaze even as Hob feels his face burn. Six hundred years, Hob thinks—he’ll be damned if he finds out his Stranger’s name from anyone but the odd man himself.
It's 1989 and Hob Gadling thinks he's been stood up. Death herself is kind enough to inform him otherwise—and, well, now Hob's got to bloody do something about it, doesn't he?
