“I should have gone to you,” he sobs to Wei Ying’s ghost, finally speaking the words that have haunted him for half a decade. “I should have been there.”
The words ring in the emptiness of the Demon Subdue Palace. Any possessions once held here have long since been looted or defaced, leaving only black stone covered with smears of red.
Wei Ying’s ghost flickers. He is nothing more than a pale shadow, a human shape that is so incorporeal simply looking from the wrong angle will dissipate him like early morning fog.
You couldn’t. You had your rules. If you had come, they would have killed all of us, he says, and Lan Wangji shakes his head.
“No,” he manages, broken. “No. It does not matter. Wei Ying. I miss you.”
He has never, in any moment, missed anything more.
(Or: a look at thirteen years of love, grief, and hope. And also the ghosts that haunt you.)
