    Summary

“There’s something you need to know,” Harrow said to John and Mercymorn. She locked eyes with Gideon, holding her gaze firm.
White-ringed eyes flicked between them, and a frown flickered on John’s face. “Alright.”

“Well, it’s interesting that you’ve chosen to tell me about the visa application now,” Harrowhark said, turning to John and Mercymorn, “when Gideon only proposed last weekend.”

John blinked. He looked between them. “Excuse me?”

    “I’m getting married,” Harrowhark said.

    “To who?” John asked.

“To my assistant,” said Harrow, ignoring the choking, strangled noise of surprise Gideon made from the door. “To Gideon Nav. We’re engaged.” She paused, then stood. “Aren’t we, Griddle?”

“No,” Gideon said, because she was the worst. “What the fuck?”

Or: Harrowhark Nonagesimus is the youngest editor ever to run the Ninth House publishing company. But when Harrow violates the terms of her work visa, her only way to retain her job is to marry a US citizen— and who better than her assistant, Gideon Nav?

    Summary

Growing up in the Ninth, Gideon Nav had thought she knew two things for certain: 1. Harrowhark Nonagesimus was a stone-hearted bitch, and 2. Harrowhark Nonagesimus did not cry. Probably physically couldn’t. Most likely she’d willed herself to be born without lacrimal glands, out of pure spite.

Both of those certainties were being thoroughly flipped on its head by that very same Harrowhark Nonagesimus sobbing into Gideon’s chest.

Harrowhark. Nonagesimus. Was. Sobbing. Into. Her. Chest. (No, saying it more slowly in her head didn’t make it any less weird.)
Gideon had an entire lifetime worth of experience with handling an angry Harrow. She could’ve dealt with that. But how was she supposed to deal with… whatever the fuck this was?

Or: Gideon accidentally makes Harrow cry with a badly chosen joke, and everything that follows.

Gideon doesn't have a girlfriend. Gideon wants a girlfriend. She's about to make that everyone's problem.

Or: five times Gideon Nav didn't have a girlfriend, and one time she still technically didn't have a girlfriend.

    Summary

Gideon no longer tried to hide herself or her blatant staring. Sometimes Harrow looked back, but mostly she averted her gaze in apparent disinterest. It infuriated Gideon. Years and years of snide comments, of telling on her for every misstep, of pretending to hold the moral high ground as she spit on Gideon, and she didn’t have the decency to give her the time of day. The next week, Gideon executed her plan. The barrier between them was as wide as a science building hallway and Gideon cleared it in four steps.

    Summary

She feels as though he’s peeling every layer of her being, one by one by one. And when he gets to her bones, he’ll find something she’ll never be able to run away from.

“…you,” the stranger says, his hands flexing into fists. Unclenching again. “You are…”

Gideon holds her breath. She doesn’t know why she thinks so, but it seems to her that Harrow does as well.

The corner of the man’s lips twitch up in a smile.

“You’re the spitting image of your mother.”
