    Summary

Kakashi has spent nearly his entire life in a freefall state, bracing himself for impact, turning his body to absorb the blow and land on his feet. Now in his early thirties he finds the rapid winds of gravity dying down around him. He finds himself crouching on solid ground. A moment of disorientation, followed by what?

The one of the best Kakashi/Gai stories I’ve read to date, and the best Kakashi POV. Better more complete review later, bust want to make sure I can find it again.

    Summary

Being a hero with no superpowers kind of sucks. Clint Barton feels out of place in the Avenger Tower; Hawkeye feels out of place in his Brooklyn apartment. It's not hell though. He's got friends on both sides of his life, and he never gets bored. Still – there's this deep loneliness inside him that nothing can seem to cure.

After the whole Loki business, both sides of Clint feel a little out of step, and he tries to avoid aliens and giant monsters and world crisis in a whole. Problem is, he's not the only one to exist on several scales.

And who better than Bruce Banner to teach someone about dual nature.

It’s so rare to find a romantic pairing that doesn’t have sex. I really appreciate this fic just for that. It also introduced me to Fraction!Hawkeye, who is miles away better than canon MCU!Hawkeye.

I might also be bookmarking it because I forget the title every damn time I want to read it.

    Summary

An AU in which Steve Rogers was born into the modern day and never received the Serum, but managed to make it into SHIELD as a handpicked protege of senior field agent Abraham Erskine. Along with Phil Coulson, Clint Barton, Natasha Romanoff, Peggy Carter, and eventually Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, Steve still tries to make a difference.

Particularly in the life of Tony Stark, who picked up what he thought was an art student in a bar, and ended up dating one of SHIELD's top agents...

I read a lot of AU fic. This is at least partially because canon is usually in one way or another disappointing. One of copperbadge's many talents is to grab canon, then step sideways and twist just enough to make the whole thing intensely enjoyable.

This one is a particular favorite of mine; I adore the tiny, scrappy version of Steve Rogers more than the big one. I also love fics about characters being delightfully competent. The relationship between Steve and Tony is charming, especially the meet-cute at the beginning of Toy Soldiers. The plotting is nicely paced, and I appreciated the way Pepper is portrayed, especially near the end of Toy Soldiers.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Most fics about the recovery of the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes have Steve Rogers at the main character. In the worst fics, WS/BB isn't even really a character, but instead an object for Steve to Have Feelings about. This is somewhat understandable considering the canon we have to work with, but it's regrettable.

This, You Protect is, hands down, the best WS/BB recovery fic. The angst, humor, and relationship building are all well balanced, and the original characters are lovable without being cloying or stealing the spotlight. The tight third person POV is what really makes it, though. Bringing the reader inside WS/BB's head allows you to see the gradual transition and growth of the character. I particularly enjoy the masterful, subtle use of pronouns/self reference.

The rest of the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series is also absolutely worth reading, but I haven't gotten all the way through it.
