    Bookmarker's Notes

Phenomenal work of xenology, and part of a series that is every bit as developed, nuanced and emotionally gutwrenching as its worldbuilding is. The use of imagery is heartbreaking, but watching Champion evolve out of the situation he has been placed in... Ooh it gives you the shivers. Personally, I don't need canon on Shiro's time with the druids, I barely want canon -- I have Switch the Beat canon.

This combined some of my favourite things: alien cultures, intense description, psychological horror, and an appreciation for the complexity of an abusive dynamic, without shying away from its fundamental horror. It's very easy to flatten any, and all of the above, very very easy, but this story not only pulls it off, but does so with skill that is rare and VERY appreciated.

Not for the weak of stomach, or heart; very strong.

    Summary

The puzzle is scattered and the Ishtars are the ones charged with gathering all of the pieces. It isn't freedom and Malik won't let anyone tell him otherwise. Freedom will only come when the pharaoh returns. 'Or perhaps it will come sooner', a thief whispers and Malik agrees. The Ishtars can be rid of this curse and Malik is the only one who can do it.

Considering Malik's plan involves fleeing with Items and puzzle pieces, cavorting with a possibly undead thief, and betraying centuries of tradition, it's not a surprise no one's accepting of his plot. Like Rishid, who does not approve but is definitely going to tag along and make sure Malik doesn't end up getting killed by his own brilliant ideas.

Bakura is highly amused by this all except for the Rishid part. Bringing your brother, no matter how huge and intimidating he may be, is not acceptable.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is without a doubt the finest thiefshipping fanfiction I have read in a long, long time. Possibly ever. It also happens to be one of the finest Ishtar fics - especially for Rishid - and absolutely indulges my sweet tooth for clan politics. Beautifully written, dialogue polished to a sheen... I love this fic.

Stunning analysis of daemons as they relate to xenobiology - combines two of my favourite subjects ever, and does so through the lens of a plotline that reminds me of The Measure of a Man. Over-all, this is beautifully crafted, and beautifully planned, and ultimately, beautiful. Well worth the read.

Delicately put Bakura, and Ryou, with their dynamic given a precision which gave me goosebumps. A+

I rarely see such beautiful prose, and this story is like stumbling upon a dragon's hoard of it.
