Summary
Basira still sent statements, Jon still worried about Elias, and Martin still worried that the Lonely would return, but their lives had settled into something almost resembling normalcy. So much so that on one rainy afternoon, Jon put his book down, turned to Martin and very matter of factly said, “We should get a cat.”
“What?”
“Or two cats. Cats should have another cat to socialize with after all… Maybe three is the best solution. Or four? No, four seems excessive…”
Jon continued to mutter away about the various benefits and drawbacks of having more than three cats before Martin finally cut in again. “What’s all this about getting cats?”

Summary
Jon opened his mouth to ask if Martin had stayed for him, but when he tried to get the words out, he couldn’t. Nothing happened. He tried again. He planned out the words in his mind: did you stay in the bed just for me? They were easy words, none more than four letters for god’s sake, but he couldn’t voice them. He tried to make any kind of sound at all, but all he managed was an embarrassing hissing sort of sound as air left his lips with no rumble of voice to go with it.
“Jon? Are you alright?” Martin rolled over to look at him, and while Jon loved him for the clear concern, he couldn’t help but wish that Martin would just stop looking. If Jon had to suffer the indignity of not being able to make sound, then he would rather it happen where no one could witness it.
After Jonah's ritual fails, Jon becomes mute.

Jon blinked up at him, sat back, closed his book, and seemed to genuinely ponder it for a moment. “Well,” he finally said, “I already nearly ended the world, Martin. I hardly think this Saturday evening will bring anything worse.”

The voice that spoke up was deep and smooth, mouth shaping around the words with sharp edges and a taciturn disposition that Martin had never heard before. It seems that the Archivist and his Temple were to forever keep Martin on his toes when it came to expectations.
“Listen, I understand that you’re here to fulfill some great duty to your city by sacrificing yourself to me, but I really don’t have the time. Let’s just rain check it this time and we can start it up again in the next two years when I don’t have very important business to handle.” Still the Archivist had not looked up at Martin.
Martin’s eyes rose in disbelief, brow already furrowing. There was no way he heard that right, right? “Excuse me?”

Summary
He’s here, something deep and instinctual whispers in him, and he perks up from where he’s been leaning against the alley wall, his eyes searching the crowd passing him by on the streets. His eyes catch on Jon before Jon spots him in turn. All dressed up nice for their date, his head turned as he looks for Martin in the completely wrong direction. Seeing Jon when he doesn’t think he’s being seen somehow feels like a stolen treasure, something precious that he shouldn’t have.
Uneasily, he thinks about how he’d sensed Jon so quickly, before he was even within his line of vision. Like he’d smelled him, heard his heartbeat-- or just sensed him somehow, standing out from the packed nightlife of downtown London. He doesn’t like it. It feels… predatory. Like he’s stalking him.
But that’s what he gets for making his boyfriend his thrall as well, he supposes.
