    Summary

John is unexpectedly invited to share Christmas with Sherlock’s family. But the seasonal celebrations bring back difficult memories for them both. This is my attempt to understand something of the damage that binds these two men together, so angst, and hurt/comfort, but with a fluffy happy ending.

Readers have asked me to transfer this story across to the easier interface of AO3, and I thought this would be the time to do it.

    Summary

In nature Aggressive Mimicry is the act of a predator resembling a safe species to appear harmless and unassuming.
John Watson has always had to make himself look small and unassuming. Invisible. This habit was adopted as a result when he was expelled from his second school after getting into, and winning, a fight with the local bully who targeted him for being poor from a broken home with a lesbian sister and an alcoholic mother.
He looks like a harmless little doctor. This leans for false assumptions that he is a harmless little doctor.

    It is a lie.

When a harmless species resembles itself to look harmful to predators in the plant and animal kingdoms, it is called Batesian Mimicry.
Sherlock looks sharp, cool, abrasive and acts as if he doesn’t care what others think. This was a persona formed in high school to distance himself and to stop others from hurting him for being different.
He is happy to tell everyone that caring is not an advantage and that alone protects him. It fits with the claims that he is a high-functioning sociopath.

    That is a lie.

This story is from the point of view of a man who made the mistake of thinking they were the truth.

    Summary

Watson finds a disturbing, barbaric, medically out-of-fashion item among Holmes’s possessions, and simply cannot let it go. How does Holmes happen to own not just any bloodletting kit, but one that once belonged to a great violin master who died before Holmes was born? The answers revealed will change both their lives - forever.

Warning for cutting, but not in a mental illness context.

A Fandom Loves Puerto Rico bid for Okapi, who supplied me with this wonderful prompt! Nicolo Paganini’s bloodletting kit.
