    Summary

"Do the MXes have a sense of humor?"

"What?" Dorian asks, brow furrowing. "No. They don't have anything," he adds, scorn obvious in his tone. "Why do you even ask?"

John gives an awkward half-shrug. "Thought I had one sassing at me last night, is all."

(takes place later in the same timeline as "Ghosts in the Machine," but that fic is not required to understand this one.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

This series features a very well written realistic portrayal of North/Markus/Simon, one of my favorite ships. I have a soft spot for ships with realistic relationships where not everything is perfect but they love each other for who they are and work through their issues. This does that perfectly on all fronts. This series shows the characters as they are not "more shippable versions" of themselves and that makes their relationships all the more meaningful and rewarding. The Gavin/Connor pairing would usually be a complete NOTP for me, but in userniko makes it work and explores dynamics, ideas, and themes that are often overlooked, due to their complexity, but which are very rich and are tackled here with tact, honesty, and empathy.

    Summary

"I think I need a name," the car's AI announced without preface.

Cindy had been almost asleep, and that sentence was not something she'd expected to hear. "What--?" She forced herself upright and looked around. Part of her knew that the voice had been the AI's, but the rest of her rejected that because cars weren't supposed to say things like that.

    Summary

Some androids say this world had been beautiful, once. It’s hard to remember that, when all North had ever known was glaring neon lights and glitter, semen-soaked mattresses and back alleys marred with graffiti, bags of rubbish, dead rats and syringes and weeds erupting from the damaged roads, abandoned houses with smashed windows and boarded doors, the slush of the November snow running blue with Thirium, red with blood.

If she lets herself, she thinks of an afternoon on a rooftop; the setting sun illuminating the snow gold and bronze; the sound of a piano playing a melancholy tune; the soft touch of a man who would be the last she ever dreamed of innocence.

There’s an ache for what could have been, if the humans hadn’t forced her hand.

North detonated the dirty bomb; Detroit belongs to the androids now. A chance encounter with a dying woman in the wasteland alters everything North thought she knew about humans.

    Or: a post-Northpocalypse road trip.

    Bookmarker's Notes

A much darker North than in canon which I normally don't go for, but this is estora so obviously it's a masterpiece. North is distorted and more hardened than in canon but she is still very much herself. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see things play out like this with Shapiro. I miss the good ending universe but I suppose this is just as canon to estora's fic universe just as the game itself covers multiple endings. This fic is beautiful and painful and it is going to haunt me.
