    Summary

The condition is that they can’t use their cultivation since the ghost was a non-cultivator and wants a normal sword duel. This was all fine and well until they realized that none of them could win against him, lasting no more than few blows before having their swords and dignity flung out of their hands.

“It’d be easier to just eliminate him,” Lan Jingyi mutters. “Otherwise we’ll be here forever.”

    “Jingyi,” Lan Sizhui scolds.

Lan Jingyi is right, of course, but the whole point of elimination is that it’s the absolute last resort. Although it’s not within their own ability to liberate this ghost, there’s…

Lan Sizhui glances at Wei Wuxian, standing idly by while he picks at under his fingernails.

    -

A glimpse of Wei Wuxian and the Gusu Lan disciples on a night-hunt.

    Summary

Wei Ying uses his smile and bright laughs like a folding screen, like one of Nie Huaisang's many fans, but Lan Wangji sees. He sees the network of lightning and raised skin on the boy's back, sees his smile falter with every barbed reprimand from Jiang Wanyin and the way he constantly skirts around the border of things, as if he has to constantly know the point where he is unwanted.

He looks at Wei Ying and sees a future of squandered potentials and a brightness curbed at every turn, of a life making himself less in a Sect that would always see him as a servant's son and the reflection of their own inadequacy, and he laments that Wei Ying could not seem to see that - See past the sense of debt and false belonging his so-called family had ingrained into him.

But Lan Wangji is a patient man, and he would make Wei Ying see in time. Even if it means using the insecurities of Wei Ying's own family against him.

    Summary

Lan Qiren would like to not be in this situation. There are too many absurdities to contend with at the same time, and Lan Qiren is determined to blame every last one of them solely on Wei Wuxian. Among aforementioned absurdities, in no particular order, are:

    A loudly braying donkey.

A surprisingly even louder Lan Jingyi, wrangling said donkey while making a valiant yet futile effort to avoid swearwords – both of which Lan Qiren intends to reprimand him for as soon as his life returns to some semblance of sanity.

The entire fact that said donkey requires wrangling in the first place due to the ill-advised end-goal being to transport the animal via sword.

The fact that this means that Lan Qiren is left to wrangle the demonic-cultivating, donkey-owning, exonerated menace of the entire cultivation world in general and Lan Qiren’s existence in particular, Wei Wuxian.

Yes, this is all Wei Wuxian’s fault.

Or: Wei Wuxian is injured on a night hunt, and Lan Qiren is stuck having to deal with it.

    Summary

Lan Wangji has never met a worse supervillain.

He finds this rather remarkable considering that he has, during his tenure as Hanguang-jun, fought quite a large number of villains. The “super” part of supervillain can of course be determined by the villain in questions’ power level, which is what separated Wen Ruohan and Jin Guangshan from their minions and successors. Certainly some of them, like Wen Ruohan’s two successors, Wen Xu and Wen Chao, lacked style, as did Su She and Jin Zixun. But what they lacked in style, each and every one of them made up for in sheer villany. Even Wang Lingjiao didn’t hesitate to kick a puppy she saw on the street.

The Yiling Patriarch, on the other hand. Well.
