Summary
Dying changes a person. And once the physical shock is gone, the pain subsumed within grit and duty, all that's left is who you decide to be. . . at your core. Shepard comes into to her new body, her new life, determined to be worthy of the chance she's been given. She finds a measure of redemption, and a challenge of surprising depth, in her greatest ally and friend. But it's not the asari, as she assumed it would be, that brings her the greatest joy. . .the sweetest torture. It is Garrus. It's always been Garrus. Struggling to find his way without her, and coming to terms with how much they seem to need each other. This story is theirs.
I include this portion of the Frost poem, the one from which I took the title, because it illustrates perfectly the way Garrus and Shepard are meant to guide one another through to the very end.
Two such as you with such a master speed
Cannot be parted nor be swept away
From one another once you are agreed
That life is only life forevermore
Together wing to wing and oar to oar. -

Summary
Commander Shepard, savior of the galaxy. Cold, cruel, calculating, brave. Her tough childhood on Earth eventually led her to the Alliance military, where she quickly moved up the ranks. When a "routine shakedown" goes horribly wrong, her life is changed forever.
Underneath that cold exterior is a woman with her own fears, desires, strengths and weaknesses. Hers is the hero's struggle, the hero's mask. Don't tell them what you're feeling. Get the job done.
This is an attempt to look at what's behind the mask.

Summary
Shepard wages war, but they hold the line.
Assignments were handed out by tired-looking Alliance operatives on the Citadel, transport was arranged by civilian support staff, and weapons were provided by whoever you could bribe into selling you one. No, they could not tell you who your superior officer was. There was a chance your superior officer would be dead by the time you arrived. If this happened, you could consider it a field promotion until back up arrived. All objectives were still expected to be completed. Transportation information was on that screen over there. Good luck, soldier. Next!
