Summary
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR S5, M30.
DO NOT READ BEFORE LAZARUS.This fiction starts with S5, M13 "Drive My Car,"
in which Five is asked to do a quick in and out mission but, unsurprisingly, everything goes wrong. Told mostly from Five's POV while she is playing double agent you-know-where with Steven. (Trying hard to avoid spoilers in the summary.)Female Five with established Five/Sam. But, if you've played these missions (and you shouldn't be reading it if you haven't!) you know there's about to be some big problems. This is not warm and fuzzy.
Later chapters will include major character death, cannon violence, and hints at non-consensual sex.
I will be adding chapters until I'm done working through my S5 feelings, so this might go on for eternity.
The bones of this story belong to Six To Start. Some missions have been tweaked to serve my own story purposes, but others follow the transcripts pretty closely.

Summary
Janine convinces Five to restart a pre-apocalypse project. In doing so, she unintentionally reawakens past pain and present problems. In the zombie apocalypse, nothing stays buried forever.
or
“Did you finish your coursework prior to Z-Day?” Janine said instead of any of the questions Five had planned for.
Five stared at her. At the very least, this was a factual question. She could do facts.
“Yes,” Five said.
It was, technically, correct. She had finished her coursework. Well, she’d dragged herself through the power of caffeine, late nights, and screaming through her coursework. The screaming in PhD programs was impressively varied. There was screaming because it was 3am and she was never going to get to sleep again. Screaming because the coffee machine had broken. Screaming because in her sleep deprived state she’d impaled her foot on a rusty nail. Screaming (happily) because she’d gotten an article accepted for publication. Screaming inside her head at her life choices.
“Excellent,” Janine said, unaware of the list of screams Five was mentally compiling.

Spoilers for up to S7 M34
After what happened at Exmoor, Five goes into quarantine and deals with lingering guilt and a few spirits that don't seem to want to fade and don't seem to like each other.
or
“I just- I’m so tired, Sam,” Five said. Her voice cracked as she spoke and she curled up on the ground, covering her face with her hands and starting to sob. “I miss them. I’m so tired. I can’t- I’m so tired.”
“I’m sorry, Five,” Sam said. He stared, unable to do anything except watch as Five crumbled and sobbed into the hard, unyielding floor. “I’m so sorry.”
So was she. So was she.

Summary
No one prepares for the zombies. Oh, they discuss it in theoretical. They consider the possibility. But, really, truly? No one's actually prepared. First it's a cough. A raspy, wet, and dry cough all in one. It sucks the air from your lungs and feels like swallowing sawdust and nails. And then your skin starts greying. Starts to dry out, quickly. A scrape leaves your skin degloving itself. And then... A moan.

Summary
Then it was just Five and Jody. Four and Five. That had been okay. Things were always at least a little okay when the two of them were together. They worked together, laughed together, and sat by the other’s bedside when one of them was in the hospital. Jody had fractured her ankle after a particularly difficult run in the rain and Five had fought through a horde of zombies by an old pharmacy to get her a brace and painkillers and then entertained her with tales of the shenanigans the kindergarteners had gotten up to so Jody wouldn’t go stir crazy as she recovered.
Sometimes on nights where the world was cold and everything seemed hopeless they’d take the pillows, blankets, and mattresses onto the floor and sleep curled up against each other. They were small boats in a terrifying storm of death and fear and pain but if they stayed tethered together, they’d make it through the night and things would get easier the next day.
Now it was just Jody. She didn’t touch Five’s side of the room. Doing that would mean saying she was gone for good, not just for now. She was only gone for now.Jody Marsh and Runner Five through some of the events of Season 1 through Season 4

Summary
Sam makes sure the private broadcast of Five’s headset is on before he begins speaking into his headset’s microphone, his tone initially having a slight optimism, though it eventually fades, becoming dejected. “Runner Five, Runner Five come in, Runner Five… Can you hear me? … Runner Five… Come in, Runner Five, if you’re out there… Runner Five, calling Runner Five, come in, Runner…”
Five jogs through the night, trying to avoid the crunch of leaves or the squish of mud under their feet. They had long since stopped trying to communicate to Sam through their broken mic that they hadn’t gone gray, that they were okay.

Aka, Sam and Runner Five's perspectives on S1M7's "A Voice in the Dark", featuring a Concerned Doc, a tired Janine, and the other residents of Abel Township. This story has a lot of dialogue that belong to Six to Start. It follows the mission transcript pretty closely for the majority of the fic, though there are some tweaked elements for my own story purposes.

“It’s okay to have hard days like this,” Sam said. He was stroking her hair. “It happens. It’s okay. Do you want to try and sleep? It might… it might help to rest.” Five nodded and he handed her the pills from Maxine. Five swallowed them and laid down as Sam laid next to her. “I’ll be right here, Five. Right here.”
“Thank you,” Five said. She curled up against him and let the medicine help her drift to sleep. “I just- I should be better by now. I shouldn’t be like this. I felt better,” she mumbled as her eyes closed. In which Abel rebuilds from Ministry occupation, not even Runner Five can prevent forest fires, and Five struggles to return home when she and home are changed forever.
