Adam never paid much attention to the news before. He pays even less attention now, but where before it was disinterest, now it’s self-preservation. His name is kept out of the headlines. All they say is that a 28 year old man was abducted and sexually assaulted by notorious serial killer and cannibal Hannibal Lecter and his accomplice, former FBI special agent Will Graham.
Adam is fine. If he doesn't leave his house and still jumps at every shadow, well. He's dealing with it. He's fine. It's fine, really. That's what he tells himself, until he meets a gruff Romanian with a dark past of his own who might even be able to make it true. Nigel is sweet and kind and everything that Adam needs.
But someone else is keeping watch over Adam, sending menacing gifts and protecting him from afar. After all, you don't just abandon family.
- Part 4 of Way Down in the Everyone Gets There
Will gets better. He takes his medication. Most days he doesn’t accuse Hannibal of trying to poison him. It feels less like a truce and more like purgatory, and that’s where he meets Adam Raki.
Hannibal's idea of a psychiatric intervention probably saved Will's life, but Will can't forgive him for it. He still feels the cuffs around his skin and the bitter bite of antipsychotics forced down his throat. He finds a way to cope with the trauma, and it has to do with a sweet boy with a kind smile who doesn't know what monsters are—not yet.
