In that day, when the the doors were open, you could travel any where or time that you wished to go instantly.
It'd be like searching for a destination, getting the coordinates beamed into your mind and solidifying within the location in space-time all in the same breath.
Within your sphere of influence - your cube- you could step physically into the realm of your choosing. And when you're ready to come back, you'd just blink like the Genie (the djinn) and re-center in the original space.
Unfortunately and quite unexpectedly, there were a vast and diverse population of species that existed with some being more volatile than others.

From monsters to menAs an initial act of protection the younger species were separated to allow them to grow, masking the doorway until they could spring forward in their evolution.
