Summary
At first, I disagreed with my own conclusion, but now I think that it makes sense: why, as a writer, am I interested in exploring multiple points of view? Why do I want to challenge myself to tap into different areas of access, privilege or lack thereof, move to different vantage points and depths of psychic distance?
Because these points of view are, and must be, unique. And they must have necessary information to the larger issue of the story. For both the writer and the reader, the most accessible path to this kind of broad issue examination is to be extremely aware that it is happening, and know the direction that all of the characters, and us as well, are traveling. A mystery, or an event told in reverse, provides this directional roadmap without conceit and serves as a sort of framing device of its own—you, the reader, are the detective, and by listening to each of these narrators’ point of view, you can discern the truth behind all of their observations.
Was the robber a woman in a red baseball cap or a man in a bathing suit?
