Summary
This is a crossover between Doctor Who and “Tam Lin,” the ancient ballad from the Scottish Borders. It also uses plot elements from The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope (1974) and the movie The Wicker Man (1973). If you’re familiar with these or any similar stories about the tithe, this may be easy to predict, but I enjoyed writing it.
This is set in Season 2 of the reboot, at Halloween, somewhere between “Rise of the Cybermen” and “Doomsday.”When I got this idea recently, I thought it wasn’t worth writing because this exact fic must exist many times over on AO3. I found only 4 results on AO3 for “Tam Lin” and “Doctor Who." And none involve the Tenth Doctor or Rose. I’m surprised because it maps onto the characters and themes so well.

After witnessing the aftermath of traveling with the Doctor at Deffry Vale High School and being abandoned on a killer spaceship for a French courtesan, Rose realizes that she has two options: spend the rest of her life in love with someone who won’t let himself love her back, pretending it doesn’t bother her, or build a life of her own without him. She chooses the latter.
After Rose’s departure, the Doctor gets an unwelcome taste of what traveling without her is like. The Doctor and Donna decide to take a nice, relaxing trip to the biggest cruise ship in the Universe, the Foresight. Sailing the seas of Kepler-22b, the Foresight has the size (and population density) of a small city, containing not only recreational and shopping areas, but industrial and residential districts as well, even supporting a community of people living there full-time. Although it appears to be a perfectly relaxing way to spend a week for the intreprid TARDIS travelers, things can often go overboard quicker than expected when the Doctor is on-call.
A series of short-stories set on the Foresight. Some may involve danger and aliens and supernatural phenomena, some may simply involve the Doctor getting stuck in the lazy river. I'll play it by ear.
