There’s that pressure again. Sitting right on his sternum and stifling every breath he takes.
It worsens in Andromache’s presence and grows heavier whenever she smiles at him. He has no words for this ache and it truly terrifies Sébastien to try and put a name to it. His heart races, climbing quickly to the peak of his throat as her hair falls in dark waves over her shoulder, dragging across his forearms like silk ribbons, and every word feels caught in his mouth.
The feeling that seems just out of reach.
All his life, Sébastien has been told, "We are asleep until we fall in love!" But throughout his forty-two years on this earth, he never paid love a second of thought. When you are starving, when you are fighting to see the next day, love is the last thing on your mind—at least, that's what he tells himself. He doesn't know it, has never felt that spark.
All this time, Sébastien has been sleepwalking through life.
But when he meets Andromache after being executed as a deserter and gaining immortality, he finds himself waking up.

Andromache nudges his shoulder. “I do not think you are a mistake.”
“If there is to be a man to walk the world for thousands of suns, let it be a man like Yusuf,” Nicolò says. “A man who understands the weight of the sword, who trades in kindness, loyalty and honor. A man who can find beauty in a simple sunrise.”
“And what of a man like you?” Andromache asks.
“There are already too many men like me in this world,” Nicolò answers. “And we can cause more than enough damage within a mortal lifespan.”
Andromache is silent next to him. Somehow, Nicolò knows she understands. For as old as she is, she has likely seen far too many men like him already.
They stand in silence for a few minutes before she asks, “Do you love him?”
Nicolò ponders for a moment. “I do not think love is enough.”
Nicolò di Genova has lived a long life. He has much to show for it, but somehow still nothing at all.
This is Nicky's companion piece to 'Beautiful Ghosts'. 'Beautiful Ghosts' should be read first (but likely not imperative).

Nicky sets the mug down on the coffee table and kneels down by the couch, his hand slipping under Joe’s (Nicky’s) hoodie to stroke the skin of his waist, gentle and familiar. He kisses the apple of Joe’s cheek, the tip of his nose, and then his mouth, before pulling back to ask softly, knowingly: “Tired, my love?”
Joe just nods, nose brushing against Nicky’s. His fingers have unconsciously curled into the hem of Nicky’s shirt.
“Rest then.” Nicky squeezes his waist, and stands up. “I’ll wake you to eat in a bit.”
After Nicky leaves, he feels Nile lean over to set her bowl down on the table, then hears an edge of concern when she asks, “You okay, Joe?”
“‘M fine.” He tips his head back so he can properly reassure her with a smile, “I just get lazy and sleepy sometimes after a mission like that.”

Nicky shakes him gently with a palm grasping him by his tummy, just to make him keep smiling and laughing, to hear him joyfully exclaim "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!" and finally lifts him up into his arms again. Khalil snuggles right back up against his chest, relaxing like he's ready to go right back to sleep, lifting his head once or twice to grin up at Nicky and giggle before face planting back down to his shoulder.
"Okay, sweetpea." Nicky tickles his little belly just a little to make him giggle some more, squirming happily in his arms. "Let's go see baba."

As Nicky fights to survive and Joe struggles not to feel anything for the former priest-turned convicted killer, they may find solace and purpose in each other.
