The legend of Sisyphus tells of a King that once tricked Death and kept him captive for about a month before Olympus wisened up and cleaned up the situation. That man was sentenced to an eternity of toil for his crimes, and he's already been dead for an era by the time Zagreus comes through to meet him. The wounds are so old that even Thanatos seems more annoyed by the event than anything.
This is an AU that asks: what if the events of the game predated Sisyphus, and Zagreus was alive to see it?

The death-drought had been going on for far too long, in Ares’ opinion. In the beginning, he'd decided to be patient, wait it out, and see what happened. But now he was more than tired of it. If none of the chthonic gods was going to do something about finding Thanatos and demanding an explanation, then someone else had to do it. And Ares had just decided he had time to spare.

Zagreus could think of a million places that he would rather be besides here. Actually, he had been to those places and could confirm that they were much better. After all that he’d done -- impulsively dropping out of the college to move abroad to be free of his father’s gaze and working random jobs to prove to his father that he didn’t need his money – he’d ended up back in this godforsaken town and on his father’s paycheck.
And Zagreus still didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. He’d returned just as he’d left – directionless.

After moving back home, Zagreus is forced to take a job at his father’s grocery store in his old town. There, he reconnects with Meg, his old flame-turned-manager, and Thanatos, his childhood friend, and is forced to confront some of the things that he’d run from.
