    What if Excalibur...

    Didn’t belong to Arthur?

After being forced out of their homeland, Princess Morgen and her family of shapeshifting dragons must now remain hidden from the rest of the world. But while her family would rather leave the past buried, Morgen refuses to be forgotten by the world she and her family once swore to protect.

Prince Arthur has always had his destiny laid out for him; to become king of Camelot. But Arthur is uncertain about his destiny and wether or not he has the makings to be a good king like his father, Uther Pendragon.

When Morgen dares to venture beyond Avalon she looses a magical family heirloom which finds its way into the hands of the every inquisitive Prince Arthur. With the aid of Father Merlin, Morgen must now infiltrate Camelot in disguise and retrieve her father’s treasure before she is uncovered.

Loosely inspired by the Merlin series, Mists of Avalon, and the original introduction of Morgen Le Fay from the works of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Vita Merlini

    Summary

Gavin got back onto his hands and knees, the cold stone chilling his hands and shins. He took a deep breath in, and as he let it slowly out, he felt the blade swing toward him. The man in green groaned as he halted the axe again, this time just a hair from the back of Gavin’s neck. He crouched and set the weapon down on the stones, then reached out to brush away loose strands of Gavin’s dark hair that had fallen into his face.

“What are you doing?” Gavin asked. As he looked up into the tall man’s eyes, he saw that the man’s pupils had grown huge in the deepening dusk. Or was it for a different reason?

“There is another way,” the man in green said, his voice deeper and thicker than before. “Another way to finish the game, without losing your head. But only if you consent.”

    Summary

Gawain is an immigrant in America, he is sixteen years old, and if that was not difficult enough, he is a promising eldest child in an ambitious family. Deep inside, however, he is not quite sure whether the path laid out by his wardens is the one he wants for himself. In his doubt, he finally accepts a long-standing invitation of the Bertilaks, family friends, to spend a summer vacation in their house in Britain, hoping to find a different point of view. It is a leap of faith since he had never before met them. It makes it all the stranger that when he arrives, they seem to know him better than anyone in his life.

    Summary

Gawain does not step forward when that fateful challenge is issued at court, but makes a different wager instead. Caught between the old gods and the new at the height of summer solstice, he does not leave home but makes a journey all the same.

“Who would you have me pray to?”

“A dangerous question to ask, looking the way you do. For I would like all pretty things to pray to me, but I take care not to make such selfish requests.”

“Selfish or not, I will pray only to you from now on.”

    Summary

“You might have made a fine ruler,” Bertilak said, rising as their vessel collided with the shore.

“That is true,” Gawain said cautiously, tethering the boat to the base of the cross, “but I am no warrior. To rule in this land is to bring ruin.”

“Better you had died, then, in order to spare countless lives?” Bertilak asked. “You would have made a martyr of yourself like Winifred.”

“Yes,” Gawain said, helping Bertilak out of the boat. “What a queer pair of ghosts we’d be.”

Bertilak sighed, spreading his arms wide. “Lead on, though thy thwarted fate awaits thee.”

“Death is not the thwarted fate I seek,” Gawain said, grabbing Bertilak’s hand, tired of waiting.

    Summary

After the conclusion of the Beheading Game at the Green Chapel, Gawain agrees to stay for the duration of the New Year's celebrations at Castle de Hautdesert, but catches Bertilak and persuades him that their bargain has not quite been fulfilled. Perhaps against good advice but with his head no longer at stake - which he isn't thinking with anyway, Gawain repurposes his fateful sash from an object of shame to a lord-ensnaring trice.

“Have at me with whatever weapon you wilt, my good knight,” and with a wink, he turned and pressed on. “I will be thus at the appointed hour.” Gawain staggered after him, not thinking himself a good knight, but certainly a man, this once more succumbing to want and wish. Of course, their game was not yet done; after, Gawain would beware. “More besides, I give you the girdle,” said Bertilak as Gawain fell into step beside him, “gold at the hems and green as my gown. A token to remind you, as you walk among high lords and ladies, of our game in the Green Chapel, chance between chivalrous knights.”
“Oh,” said Gawain, twisting the silk between his fingers, “yes, my lord, I will take it. I thank you.”

    Summary

Given an appointment five nights north, Gawain believes he will be acting as a would-be knight to a forgotten lord and sets upon his path with a heavy heart. Instead, he finds a softer and stranger duty waiting for him.

Gawain can feel his hand trembling as the lord brings it to his lips. All of it is for a singular reason: that it is so deeply right to be touched in this way by another man. The press of a kiss to the top of his hand causes a satisfaction to wash over him that he did not know was possible before now.

“A simple start to what I would have you engage with here,” the lord explains, and Gawain does not understand but he nods all the same.

Christmas Day arrives in a soft breeze through the trees. The faint sheen of morning light glows orange in the air. A chill crawls over the moss latched onto weathered brick of what remains of a chapel in the woods.

The hand of the knight, rough but not stiff, not uncomfortable. Soothing, against his own will, in the way it often was. The act sparked a memory; of Essel, the lord and his lady, the acts upon which he had been subjected, though not unwillingly.

    If only he were unwilling.

    Summary

Gawain came to them clothed in uncertain yellow, on the cusp of the winter solstice. Earth and rain had turned to mud on his skin. Haunting pain tingled his face. Exhausted and exalted.

“Ambivalence and contradiction,” the Lady muttered. “Warning. Insanity.” Ill-winds and ill-temperament. She wrote about consequences too often to ignore such a clear omen.

“Goldfinches,” the Lord replied. “Daffodils and irises. Lemons. Peaches.” His eyes hazed over at the thought of good peaches--he appreciated every aspect of living.
