Summary
Every love story has two perspectives. Cecil has told his in great detail. But when Carlos first arrived in the small town of Night Vale he had no intention of falling in love. In fact, he had no intention of staying at all.
In 2012, a stranger visited Carlos' university office offering a fully funded year of research. It was a gift no scientist could ever refuse. But 12 months is a long time to be in the middle of nowhere, especially when everyone seems to be trying to kill you. Well, everyone except the radio host.

It’s also an inherently doomed endeavor -almost certain to take the mind and life of the attempter. In a world which may merely be a collective delusion, where truths can change shape or even attack outright, there is something marvelous about even half-hearted attempts to understand. Nevertheless, hidden under mundane impossibilities lurk truths that should never be revealed. Truths better off with their screams silenced; abandoned to the mercies of the void. And that is what Carlos, dear, dear Carlos simply does not understand.

Summary
He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice when behind him, the two girls' conversation stopped abruptly. A brief pause, and his mind only came back to earth when Maureen spoke up. "Well, I got more stuff to do."
He turned around to look at them as they were heading to the back room.
"Me too. See you later, Cecil!" Dana said, smiling at him before following the other girl. The door closed behind her.
Momentarily confused at their sudden departure, half of his mind only heard the bell above the front door ring, signifying another customer. When he did turn to see who it was, Cecil swore he almost choked on his own spit. In all honesty, his mouth may have dried a little in that moment, but still, he definitely almost choked. There was no other explanation for the small sound he made in his throat.
On his defense, it was ultimately justifiable.
...
Or where Cecil experiences a less-than-normal day at work, but then a stranger comes right in to spare him the usual weirdness. Cue both of them getting flustered.

Cecil is the Voice of Night Vale. This is common knowledge, of course, and each night, the calming baritone of his voice sweeps over the city, bringing news and insights to each and every citizen of the small desert town.
Why is it, then, that Cecil was missing for four years during his time as an Intern? The prophecy came true, and a Radio Host needed to be created. The others didn't last, but Cecil was strong enough to survive Station Management, after all.
Years later, he lives a quiet and happy life, with a one Carlos the Scientist, perfect and gentle, caring and loving. But the past dies hard, and it may be time for Cecil to prove his loyalty to Night Vale one more time.
Post Cassette.
Much of Cecil's back story, including abuse/rape/torture is present here, so do tread carefully.
