    Summary

I see your ‘Aziraphale forgets what Heaven was like Before but Crowley remembers’ and I raise you ‘Aziraphale remembers Crowley before he was a demon, but he believes he has fundamentally changed and will never be that person again, while Crowley remembers very little of his former life, and does not recognise Aziraphale’.

    ***

It had been rather more than seven days since the War in Heaven had sent a large portion of the population plummeting downwards. It wasn’t long to get over the grief of a lost loved one, but it was enough to lessen it slightly, and just enough to grow used to the idea that you’d probably see them again very soon, but that they would be different, no longer who they used to be.

Still, it was unsettling when Aziraphale realised who the Serpent of Eden was – or rather, had been.

    Summary

After their perfectly dreadful meeting in St James's Park in 1862, Aziraphale is utterly distraught both by Crowley's request and its implications. In his distress, he visits his club to soothe his nerves, but finds no respite there.

At a discreet gentlemen's club in 1862, Aziraphale seeks distraction in the arms of a handsome young man, even as he struggles to keep his mind off his oldest and dearest friend. Before the evening's out, the young man's resemblance to a certain tempting individual is regrettably all too clear.

    Summary

What happens when Aziraphale's fears are justified. When Crowley was asking for holy water, he did not mean to use it for "insurance". When Crowley is so lonely and he truly believes him and Aziraphale can never be true friends, or anything more. When he believes he has no one.

What happens when Crowley is too tired to go on... What happens when Crowley believes it is better without him on Earth.

    Summary

Aziraphale pours for them in Mesopotamia, in Greece, in France. Crowley raises his glass in inns, in restaurants, in the Soho bookshop.

"What shall we toast?" he asks, and it echoes down the ages, a smooth, sliding spiral that comes around and around, but never quite in the same place.

    Aziraphale smiles fondly. "To us."

Crowley only hesitates a moment, because it's been hard to wait, but Aziraphale all but promised him this moment was coming the night he handed over the holy water. There are spirals here, too.

    Summary

Aziraphale starts something in the Bastille that gets out of his control. He's not used to that.

One of them's in love. The other wants to insist it's only a dalliance. It's going to be a rough ride.

“Don’t try to fool me, my dear. That is a temptation, for me to believe that, to imagine I’ve redeemed you, and I know you can’t love, or you wouldn’t be a demon.” He reaches two fingers up to Crowley’s cheekbones, one under each yellow, slitted eye, as if to remind him they’re still Hell-eyes, serpent-eyes, whatever’s on his tongue (chocolate, the angel thinks, and the phantoms of my kisses). “No more of this talk, or we shall have to stop. These pleasures are only what they are, but all the same I should hate to abandon them.”

There’s a short silence. “So should I,” says Crowley, in a tone of concession.

“There. So by the power of Heaven I abjure you – “ he needs to make this playful, he can’t be angry in this bed that’s just been so full of soft delights, something’s tugging at him inside and he doesn’t like it – “speak no more of this.”
