A figure from Lucien's past shows up to collect on an old arrangement. When Molly doesn't want to talk business, the stranger takes him and the Mighty Nein for himself instead.
Caleb is only just able to get Jester to safety in time. But when the rest of his friends fall victim to their captor's vampiric thrall, that leaves him trapped and alone against the twisted attentions and easy cruelty of a wizard more powerful than he's ever dreamed of being.
Jester struggles to understand her enemies and make a plan of attack. Her friends are counting on her to save them, even if some of them don't know it anymore, and so she is determined to be the light in the darkness for them and all the people of Tanner's Crossing.
With a little bit of magic and a little bit of research and a whole lot of determination as they fight their own battles, Caleb and Jester might just save their friends before they lose themselves in the bargain.

There’s nothing as intimate as a resurrection ritual; Caduceus holds all of Molly (and there’s other names in there too, whispers of some other person, but Caduceus ignores them for now) in his hands, feels the bright pulse of his soul, and whispers to it.
Do you want to come back?
The soul brightens, sparks, flutters. I…
You don’t have to. Caduceus is gentle, soft. There’s so much out here, and the astral plane is very, very beautiful. It is no small thing, to voluntarily return to a physical body, to the material world, after this.
Sudden warmth, a needle-sharp longing, and Caduceus feels a tug of love, a pull so strong he’s momentarily rocked backwards.

rage allows you to shrug off fatal blows.
While you 're raging, having 0 hit points doesn't knock
you unconscious. You still must make death saving
throws, and you suffer the normal effects of taking
damage while at 0 hit points. However, if you would die
due to failing death saving throws, you don't die until
your rage ends, and you die then only if you still have 0

Jester has waltzed through life assuming it’s like living out a story.
Now she stands before a real beast, more ancient than she can comprehend, and she knows real life is different. She’s known for a while, whether or not she’s wanted to admit it. Adventure is gruesome and terrifying and sad. These are not things she’d ever imagined nor things she’d planned for.
Nothing has felt less like a story than the moment Jester sees Beau dangling limp from the mouth of the dragon.
