Summary
In the generic rolling countryside of Victorian England, there sits a farm estate. It boasts acres of grassland, grazed by cows and sheep. Patience, a resourceful young milkmaid who has taken on the running of the dairy, and Phyllis, the shepherdess, have been neighbours since their childhood. They do not have much in the way of material possessions, yet they have each other. Together, they stand up to the worst that society can threaten them with: marriage.

Summary
Phyllis is staying on the Lord Chancellor’s country estate. It is hunt season, so she is surrounded by unwanted admirers. Patience lives in the nearby village, and the two girls strike up a friendship. Meanwhile, a famous local poet has captured the hearts of all the other wards in Chancery. And of Lord Tolloller, of course.
The narrative takes place before either of the operettas.
