Bookmarker's Notes
Words cannot even begin to describe how amazing this series is. It's canon divergence from the end of CA:TWS, with Bucky recovery and Bucky joining the Avengers and eventual Steve/Bucky, and it's hilarious and heartbreaking, with warm, lovingly mocking observations from a Bucky POV that's unique and evolving as he begins to reclaim himself. It has excellently drawn OCs in addition to fantastically funny takes on the canon characters, and I really wish this was the version that got filmed, because it would have made an awesome series of movies. Of course, the movies would have been missing the Bucky's narrative voice, and that would be criminal. If you're even slightly a Bucky fan (or Steve fan, or Sam fan, or Nat fan, or Tony fan, or...), do yourself a favor and carve some time out to settle in and read these. It'll be worth it.

Summary
When the Valkyrie hits the water, Steve doesn’t die. Instead, he crawls out of the wreckage and finds himself in an amazing, confusing land that could be the alternate world of Nowhere—or it could be his dreams. And he gradually realizes he’s not the only one there. Steve doesn’t know if he’s even alive, but he’s certain of this: Bucky’s there with him, sharing his dreams, and outside their idyllic world, he’s suffering. Something is terribly wrong. Steve has to find Bucky—if he can. But how does he do that when he awakens in a new century where he feels like he’s all alone?

Another beauty from Gwyn, this one working dreamsharing around the canon of the MCU up to Winter Soldier. Gorgeous imagery, great Steve+Thor friendship plus roadtripping, Morita cameo, and other good things. There's a kind of melancholy, yearning tone to this one, or maybe it's just the mood I was in when I read it, but bring some tissue.

Gwyn does it again, this time with an AMAZING Sam & Bucky road trip to the place in the Alps where Bucky died, and then to the place where the Winter Soldier was born. And oh, it is funny and achy and full of FEELINGS and amazing scenery and action sequences and dear god, this is what Civil War should have given us. Damn you, Marvel.

They’ve decided to start producing Bucky Bears again, now that he’s all shiny and redeemed and fighting for good on this big Avengers misfits team. "He has a little shiny gray arm," Bucky says, wiggling the stuffed arm in question, one of the tweaks made in the new model. It takes Steve a second to realize that Bucky’s got a small smile on his face, actually looks a little bit proud around the eyes.
Or, Bucky relearns himself and how to be on a team, the rest of the Avengers try to get answers, and everyone watches too much Criminal Minds.

An AU that manages to be, in its way, as tragic as the canon. Yet it's still beautiful and funny, and Bucky is Bucky, even when he doesn't know himself. And Steve is Steve, especially when he needs to remember for both Bucky and himself. Also, Natasha rocks it in a supporting role of great import.

A brief piece from Steve's POV, and I love this glimpse into Steve's grief, loneliness, and renewed sense of purpose on discovering that Bucky was alive. This is an interlude in "Upgrade: Advanced Happiness Skills," so it's best to read that story first to understand what's going on in this one. This is a bit achy, a bit sexy, and a lot funny, sweet, and loving. Beautiful.

There wasn’t anything left to salvage. That’s what Fury believed. It would have been a kindness to put him down.
When SHIELD finally releases Bucky from custody, he is not the man anyone expects him to be. Steve struggles to reconcile the stranger with the man who was once his best friend, but with Hydra regrouping after the events at Triskelion, Steve is dragged back into battle when Bucky needs him the most. Meanwhile, Hydra is itching to have its prize weapon back under their control, and a devastating betrayal pits Bucky against a terrible piece of ex-SHIELD tech that threatens to destroy everything he's struggled to rebuild. In order to survive, he must decide who he is going to be: the vulnerable Bucky Barnes or the indomitable Winter Soldier? It turns out there might not be as big a difference as everyone seems to think.

A unique, heartbreaking take on Bucky that literally had me in tears several times, so be prepared. Also a great, nail-biting actiony plot, which always impresses me, but it certainly didn't help my intense dislike for AoS or SHIELD post-TWS, so if you've got those same issues, be warned. Awesome, hurty Steve and Nat too, and acknowledgement of Sam's damage, and fantastic supporting Pepper, JARVIS, Clint, and Tony. And okay, most of the AoS crew turned out okay in the end, but damn. Still, Bucky himself rocked it hard, and Steve was Steve and that was awesome, and yeah. It's a beautiful thing, just bring tissue and pace yourself, mmkay?

Steve is incredibly, inexpressibly grateful to have Bucky back. He is. There is no amount of nightmares, of rage, of grief and alcohol-fuelled fights that can make him anything less than absolutely humbled by the wonder of having Bucky in his life again after losing him, after living without him for three excruciating years.
But.
It’s so selfish he’s a little disgusted with himself. He’s got what’s as close as dammit to a bona fide miracle — and still, every now and then, in the darkest recesses of his mind, he’s not satisfied.

Beautiful, beautiful little post-TWS story about Bucky knowing Steve but not knowing himself and needing to find himself while destroying Hydra bases and all kinds of things I love seeing addressed in fic in the midst of some really gorgeous language use and really, I'm only pissed that I didn't write it. But that should not stop anyone from reading it and giving it love.
