“You said you’d be here tomorrow,” Celeste accuses when Nile steps on the creaky floorboard.
She clicks the lamp by her bed on, revealing she’d been sitting up against the headboard, bare legs crossed, not asleep at all, waiting.
“I got impatient,” Nile says.
Her favorite thing about Celeste is her smile. It’s sly, coy, like she’s got things to hide. It makes Nile feel less guilty for wasting Celeste’s time, to think she might have her own skeletons, her own nightmares, hidden away in a place Nile can’t see.

She feels the shame of killing acutely, but not of lying. If she tells the truth they will make her sleep again, and she will wake as she was before, innocent in a way, until the last moments, when her hands are bloodied.
And she’s not going back to that.

Ever since we were little my parents would pick us up after they got off work and we’d all go to the polls and wait in line together, didn’t matter if it was for a school board election or the president. They’d let me and Jordan into the booth with them to watch, and sometimes, if the lines hadn’t been too long, we’d wait for family friends who were also there. And then we would go out for ice cream to celebrate.”

The recording dissolves to static, then loops over. Nile steps closer to watch it again, and DZ does not back up, which is a good sign.
After a couple more loops, Nile tells her, “There’s no Kaysani settlement on Tatooine.” DZ lets out a dismayed descending note. Nile adds, “But there is a Senator Yusuf al-Kaysani.”
She could swear Dizzy’s status light gets a little brighter. Nile smiles, pleased to be of assistance. “Can you play back the whole message?”
Not without the correct authorizations.
“Okay.” Nile sits back on her heels and weighs logistics against the hours of daylight left. “I’ll make you a deal. Stick around long enough for me and Jay to scrap your pod, wait out the night at my farm, and I’ll take you to Mos Eisley tomorrow. If al-Kaysani is on Tatooine right now, that’s where he’ll be.”
