Summary
Rex’s disappearing at the end of the movie wasn't him disappearing from existence. It was him being slowly taken out from the alternate reality he created and being placed back into his universe, where he belongs. Unfortunately Emmett, believing Rex was going to be gone forever, went and did something stupid. He latched and hung onto his ultra-cool, bad future-now-alternate self in a poor attempt to keep his Vest Friend from his “doom”.
Now Rex, with Emmett in tow, has to find and piece together his super cool ship, hopefully find his raptor's, and regain all his “space-and-time” gadgets in order to send Emmett back to his alternate past. All the while trying to avoid his ex-friends and the overflowing metaphorical jar of emotional issues that comes with them. Joy.

Summary
Right after the two worlds combine together in peace, Emmet, the main hero, feels like he's not a hero as he was a few years ago, and his friends had been helping everyone in their own ways, especially his girlfriend Lucy, which upsets him much, considering his known abilities of Master Build and Break weren't enough to be recognized as "heroic".
But when a mysterious, glowing green meteor crashes near his house and he touched it out of curiosity, he suddenly develops magical powers that created a metallic dark blue watch on his right wrist, and with a bit of inner anger, can transform into his well-known alternate ego of himself, Rex Dangervest (now with superhero powers and abilities) that can be useful to save his friends - and everyone else in Syspocalypstar - from certain harm.
When a former villain that's returning back to his evil ways has been discovered after years of being ignored, he himself must find a way to redempt him back to being good again - all while not causing more troubling issues along the way.
Let's all hope he saves the world without any Legos being damaged into pieces, wouldn't he?
