Summary
In the aftermath of Agravaine's betrayal, with Morgana driven from Camelot yet again, Arthur makes his true feelings about Merlin known. Merlin, however, has been keeping two terrible secrets from Camelot's king. The first, a death sentence: he is a sorcerer, and has practiced magic since before they've ever met. The second, a dangerous proclamation of love that Merlin has long since known Arthur must never hear. And yet, as soon as the words tumble out of Arthur's mouth, Merlin is too eager to mirror Arthur in this dance.
The relief at his secret coming out into the open is nothing compared to the crushing guilt of his lies continuing to drive them still further apart. Sooner than either of them realizes, though Merlin is lodged in the firm, unyielding grasp of Camelot's king, Morgana strikes; seeking her target out with a vengeance unlike anything Camelot has ever seen. And, in some strange, unexpected way, she succeeds in her mission, leaving Arthur to furiously pursue Merlin across and beyond the lands of Albion.

Merlin flees his hometown for the big city and crashes with Gwen, his friend from university. As he settles in, he meets Gwen's new girlfriend Morgana, gets on the wrong foot with Morgana's ass of a brother, and finally tries to become a functioning adult.
Only, the bad dreams he's been having are getting worse, and the voice he keeps hearing in his head is getting louder...More than that, it seems like his new roommate may not just be the depressed, rich pretty boy he first appears to be. That there is something that lies beneath the surface of the city and the fragile understanding Merlin has of himself, his world, and the people around him.
Maybe one person in particular.
Lots of knight content, Merlin is a bit of a traumatized bitch, destiny is bullshit etc.

Something is wrong with the lake. It’s a long accepted fact among local residents that something about it is not normal. It looks normal, a picturesque body of water by the road with a little island and some old ruins rising up from the centre. The bloke the council sent for the environmental survey said it was normal. Everything around it is normal. But the locals know it’s not.
Merlin and Arthur are back together, so shouldn't they have a happily ever after? Not exactly. Merlin is dealing with the shock and guilt of having Arthur back after centuries of waiting while Arthur is struggling to adjust to the 21st century. Plus there's that whole "Albion's need is greatest" thing to deal with and Merlin really needs to get round to telling his boyfriend about everything he missed while he was busy getting knocked out or enchanted. They could really use some help. Lucky for them it's on it's way.

Gwaine and Elyan follow Merlin into the woods and get a front row seat to the Druids reverence of the warlock.
Arthur shows up and decides now is the right time to start the conversation with Merlin, but he struggles to start. Merlin is patient and Maggie knows that even the King needs some emotional support now and again.
