When I was much younger, my grandfather, and namesake, would take me to Liberty Island. He’d buy us some ice cream and talk about how he left his country to escape the first world war, with my grandmother pregnant with my mother. To Thea, he was a hero. To me, he was the cool guy who bought me ice cream and showed me magic tricks and put my on his strong and broad shoulders at the top of the statue to look out at the ships going by. I hoped another blond-haired, plucky little kid like me was on his grandfather's shoulder, pointing and waving at our boat.
For good measure, I wave back.

Bouncing a little girl on his hip and murmuring nonsense to her in that weird branch of German they only speak near the border, Ernst looks... calm. More mature, even, if in need of a haircut. The girl keeps trying to grab his rosary beads and put them in her mouth- she can reach them where they're falling out of his pocket. It's like a scene out of a perfect, family-friendly picture show.
Hanschen doesn't have the right (or nerve) to interrupt.

Hanschen hasn't been back to that tiny, stick in the mud little German town since his sister's wedding. He didn't wait until the reception was over to pack up his bags and head off to Switzerland, where the number of pro-war loonies was about half of that in Deutschland. He doesn't regret leaving, until he eventually remembers that people expect him to return.
That's where it gets... complicated.
