    Summary

“We were never just hunters, though,” Sarah says. “We’re sailors. Even with all those monsters swimming in it, the sea’s our home. It’s in our blood.” She levels a look to Jacob. “It’s in her blood, too.”
Again, he doggedly shakes his head. “It’s no place for a kid.”

“Sophie will expect you in tonight, I hope you know,” said Jack. “She writes that it’s been too long between visits.”
    “Just so,” Stephen said.
“You will stay and have tea with us?”
    “Naturally.”
“So often she sings my praises, I imagine she’s wont every now and then to weigh up my faults with someone who knows them well.”
    Stephen hummed noncommittally.
“She sees nearly as much of you as she sees of me, I’ll wager,” Jack continued.
“Surely not,” Stephen answered, and when he realized the accidental meaning behind his words, they both fell silent.

Or: when Jack entertains a guest at their apartments, he hangs a hat on the door to warn Stephen away. Despite this, Stephen ends up catching an eyeful.

    Summary

Not even a small love could be well hidden, and Stephen's was certainly not small anymore. Had it ever been, when faced with such a giant as Jack Aubrey?

No, it had not. Certainly not now, after everything, at the end of the world, sitting in a ruined street with ruined hands and a ruined heart.

He took a deep breath: cologne, again. Jack, again.

Groaning theatrically, Jack got to his feet. He extended a hand to Stephen, who still sat motionless and stiff on the cold pavement. A lone street lamp illuminated the short curls of Jack's hair, which was growing out over his ears now, and haloed him, so tender in the black night and gently smiling.

    Stephen took the proffered hand.

    Summary

At the dawn of the 19th century, England and France are at war, and one Captain Talis has been given command of a small, yet reliable ship. By chance he happens upon Viktor, a doctor and surgeon – the exact sort of man that Captain Talis needs for his crew.

Aka the Master and Commander AU that nobody expected, but the more you think about it, the more it screams Jayvik.

    Summary

“Commodore Horatio Hornblower, Captain William Bush, may I present to you our ship’s surgeon and my dearest friend, Doctor Stephen Maturin.” Jack is brightly gleaming once more, delighted to have such esteemed guests visiting with news of foreign shores. He waits impatiently for the murmured introductions, and doesn’t miss the way Stephen shakes Bush’s hand first, very carefully and gently, and nobody misses the way Stephen’s fingers crook even worse than Bush.
“This is our man Styles,” Commodore Hornblower introduces the fellow. Styles touches his cap respectfully and ignores the fiery warning in Captain Bush’s glare.
Killick grumbles in the cabin loud enough to earn a quirked eyebrow from Captain Bush. “An’ it’s the Doctor shouldn’t be out in the cold, ‘e says, an’ keepin’ ‘im out there an’ all.”

“I am not too heavy?” Stephen wheezed faintly from his side. He was going limp. Alarm beat in Jack’s heart.

“Only as heavy as a couple of raisins.” Jack crouched down and gathered Stephen into his arms: the tense feeling in his chest grew as he noticed that Stephen didn’t so much as protest. “Stephen-”

“Hush,” Stephen whispered. He patted Jack’s arm, head lolling back against Jack’s shoulder. He was growing paler by the second, even as Jack carried him down below. “May God set a flower on your head, Jack Aubrey, and He…He knows I have loved you very much.”

And then he was a dead weight in Jack’s arms.

    Summary

Stephen noted this pattern often in surly patients cured of a lingering pain: a miraculous improvement in temperament, earthly angels the morning after they damned him to hell. This did not bother him, of course. He was soothed at the reminder that man was a creature of circumstance, and that improvement of the spirit was tied to the improvement of the material conditions. In nature, in man, in society: where pain fermented, evils brewed.
What bothered him was the disproportionate gratitude towards him, personally. And it bothered him, too, that he could not wish this sailor a proper goodnight, because he did not remember the sailor's name.

    Summary

Sanguinity texted me "it was your story about Aubrey at a dinner party with Hornblower and Bush, and looking at Bush being under-appreciated by Hornblower, and thinking, "well, if you're not going to hit that, I am" and making Hornblower lose his tiny little mind with jealousy, yes?"

    I replied, "Yes!"

She responded "WELL, SOME of us would very much like to see that story published."

I had posted this on a DW community. So here it is on AO3, years later. I hope y'all like it.

    Summary

Stephen's needle flashed in the lantern-light as he worked, again and again quickly, well-practiced and indefatigable precision. The needle-point swam through Jack’s shoulder as Jack swam through water, smooth and efficient, and Stephen paused only to occasionally dab away new blood.
His abilities of surgical precision were rivaled only, he considered with some strange muted pride, by his marksmanship with a pistol.

    Summary

Stephen took hold of Jack's face again, but not this time to cherish. He held him still—Jack making a mild complaining sound—and moved back far enough for the lantern-light to fall upon Jack and bring him into focus. There—there, on his jaw, where Stephen's hands had grabbed him—a faint smudge of the silvery dust. And on the side of his neck where the shirt lay loose, another trace of it, glittering like assassins' knives; Stephen remembered how he had combed all of his treacherous fingers through Jack's hair, stealthily savouring him. Contaminating him.
