    Summary

.....Mr. Collins arrived, at the appointed hour and full of ecstasies over the avenue leading up to the house which reminded him, they were told, very much of the avenue leading up to Rosings Park- although Lady Catherine’s trees were somewhat taller, the natural consequence of Rosings having been the work of many more generations than Mansfield Park. Introductions were made, all the appropriate bows and curtsying performed, and as Mrs Norris had remained at her own home in protest of the visitor’s incursion, there was no one likely to be uncivil and provoke an argument once they all moved in to the drawing room and sat down...

    OR,

A little while after the Rushworth Scandal breaks, Edmund Bertram invites a new acquaintance of his- Mr. William Collins- to visit Mansfield Park in the hopes of his enlivening the family, and being a good influence on his brother's newly developing morals.

Tom would like to know if it is always immoral to beat someone about the head with their own copy of Fordyce's Sermon, or if it can sometimes count as self defence.

    Summary

The year 1796 sees England as a scandal-ridden country. Forced marriages are all too common, fathers of young ladies make sure to always have a marriage license ready, wealthy gentlemen make sure to never be alone in a room with a female, not even their own mothers. In the county of Hertfordshire, for example, no fewer than 78 % of the newly-wed couples give ‘to avoid a scandal’ as the main reason for their marriage (compared to 43 % in 1785), a recent survey showed.

Dire times force the British government to enact drastic measures, and Elizabeth Bennet is forced to seek out the education of a chaperon in order to comply with the new laws.

How Fitzwilliam Darcy’s wife made him dine more than once with the worst couple in the world in the winter of 1814-15.

Four years after the end of Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy settle in town for winter to network, show off their newest baby, and generally enjoy the season with their friends and family in the optimistic aftermath of Napoleon’s exile to Elba. Their plans go awry, however, when the newly- and unhappily-married Rushworths (of Mansfield Park) move in next door to play out their domestic drama with the Crawford siblings against the backdrop of the Ton generally and the Darcys’ front doorstep in particular.

    Summary

Mary looked back at Ned and Frances with a mischievous smile. The latter looked for the sofa, making her better impression of not-terrified after having quickly said to Charlie a variation of Thank you for inviting us. Ned promised her he’d be back, and followed Mary to the kitchen, to empty their grocery bags. He hadn’t brought anything, and Mary’d made him stop to an off-license to “At least buy a pack of six”. She dumped her and Caroline’s gin by the marble top, and then thought better of it and hid it in a cabinet. Caroline said Hi to Liam, who said Hi back and How are you and Thank you for coming. Then Charlie wrapped his arms around their shoulders—Caroline had goosebumps, imagine, this is just a glimpse of what this year’s going to be!—and announced a tour of the house, so that they could leave their jackets and bags in his room.

    Summary

The night before the day that Mr. Rushworth has promised to propose on, Maria Bertram finds herself somewhat reluctantly examining her feelings for her intended. The end marriage offers- freedom from the constraints of Mansfield Park and an independence hitherto unknown- is all important to her but Maria is not wholly convinced that using Rushworth as a means is worth the cost of having to put up with him for the rest of her life.

    Or,

A snapshot of how Miss Bertram came to make the choice that ought to have meant that 'all was safe' with Crawford, and accepted a proposal from a man who, £12,000 a year or no, was something of a very stupid fellow indeed.

    Summary

Tom Bertram was just seventeen and Fanny a child of ten and he didn’t really payed her that much attention when there were so many more interesting subjects – horses, gambling and drinking for starters.

Maria loves her aunt better than anyone else in the world.

When Fanny is playing with them Maria’s attention is always on her, telling her what to do, lecturing her. Julia feels a little bad about it, but she is free to do what she wants and for that feeling it’s worth it.

Fanny isn’t the only person in the family that has problems. Bertam siblings are pretty messed up too. They don’t treat Fanny fairly, but I think they deserve some defence and character dimension.

    Summary

Mary always expected the worst of people. She loved good company (except for the times when she loved bad company even better), but always guarded herself because no one could have been trusted – especially with her heart. Because everybody is taken in at some period or other – most of all when it comes to marriage.

When I watched Mansfield Park for the first time, I hated Mary. Now watching it again and reading book, I absolutely love her. She is so interesting and so different from Bertrams and I love watching their dynamics and communication. This is mostly mix of passages from Chapters IV, V and VII and a little bit of my interpretation.

    Summary

“I can never be important to any one,” claimed Fanny and meant it with all her heart, because really if no one cared about her so far; if no one cared from those who was supposed to care the most; if no one from her family cared, there surely must have been something wrong with her.

I am not that far in the book, but Fanny's character astonishes me. She is so tough even though she doesn’t look the part at the first sight. This is mostly interpretation of Chapter III.

    Summary

Henry observed how Fanny watched Edmund, turning to him like sunflower turning to sun. Waiting for approval, acceptance, validation of her opinions.

Based on the ending of Chapter II of Mansfield Park: "... but he recomended the books which charmed her leisure hours, he encouraged her taste, and corrected her judgment: he made reading useful by talking to her of what she read and heightened its attraction by judicious praise. In return for such services, she loved him better than anybody in the world except for William; her heart was divided between the two." and the few following chapters...

    Summary

“I will not live in unequal relationship. I had enough of that. I won’t be looked down upon all my life. I might be afraid of poverty, but I will not sacrifice the little bit of dignity which I have left,” she wanted him to finally understand that she might be afraid, but she will not yield, she will not be bought.

Watching Mansfield Park I realised that while Henry Crawford definitly isn't ideal partner, he never speeks bitterly (or acts for that matter) about Fanny's inferior social status. And in that regard he behaves better than Mr Darcy - which is a nice irony if you'll ask me... So I wanted to explore that a little.

    Summary

Fanny lived on debt all her life. All her family did. And she wasn’t prepared to marry a wealthy gentleman with all the grandeur, rooms too large for her to move in with ease and a constant terror of mishandling something. And by that make herself indebted even more.
And Henry just didn't get it. Although to be fair, she didn't get him either.
