He wasn’t exactly aware at first, not in a particularly sentient way that is. He was simply an animal fighting to survive- who was disorientated, in pain, and calling for a parent strung up like a cattle. His gills had ached and burned, searching for water and only meeting air. He’d felt a grip around his tail, and had reacted on instinct, fear and panic and pain clouding his mind as his teeth met flesh, and his captor screamed, throwing him finally, into the soothing waters.
