    Summary

Charlotte was not the first woman Jack had stepped out with in the months since Phryne’s message not to follow her, but she was the first he’d brought around to the ragtag family he’d found himself a part of and that was, perhaps, why it stung so much when it ended shortly after.

“I was his first arrest, didya know that?”

“I did,” Phryne said. “But I’m afraid I don’t know the specifics. I’ve never been able to pry that particular story out of him.”

Elsie laughed. “Well, no wonder. Our poor Jackie boy don’t come off so well.”

“Oh?” Phryne leaned forward, her curiosity most definitely piqued. She crossed her legs and rested her chin on her hand, propped up at the knee. “Do tell.”

    Summary

It was slightly before 9pm when Dot and Phryne pulled up to House of Fleuri. The Hispano had just passed under the arch behind the shop when they caught a glimpse of a foot. Then a leg. Then a torso, neck, head, and, finally, a very familiar fedora. Phryne stopped the car and both women turned and tilted their heads to look up simultaneously.

“Is that who I think it is?” Phryne asked.

“Afraid so, miss,” Dot replied with a grimace.

It’s well known among the lads at City South that there are three things you should never, ever disparage around Senior Constable Hugh Collins - the boxer Snowy Baker, the Abbotsford Football Club, and his wife.
