"What was Claquesous? He was night... He was a ventriloquist. Babet used to say, 'Claquesous is a nocturne for two voices.' Claquesous was elusive, vagrant, terrible. No one was sure whether he had a name, Claquesous being only a nickname. No one was sure whether he had a voice, as his belly spoke more often than his mouth. No one was sure whether he had a face, as only his mask had ever been seen. He would vanish like a ghost, and seemed to appear out of the ground." - Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (Christine Donougher translation)

    Summary

Enjolras has been in love with Grantaire for as long as he can remember. There's only one problem: a witch cursed him when he was a child, condemning him to hurt everyone he cares about every time he opens his mouth. His friends have a theory on how to break the curse, but honestly, who would want to come any close to someone who has nothing but disdain and sharp words for them?

    Summary

¿o tal vez no?

“Utopía hoy, carne y hueso del mañana”. La música del pueblo no se deja someter, a pesar de lo pasado, mientras el futuro que anhelan sus corazones espera para nacer, su luz asomando en el horizonte como la aurora de un nuevo día.

    Summary

Enjolras, named first, later we will see why, was an only son and was rich. He was a charming young man, capable of being intimidating. He was angelically beautiful. […] Like certain young men early in this century and late in the last, who became illustrious in early life, he had an exceedingly youthful look, as fresh as a young girl’s, though he had moments of pallor. Already a man, he still seemed a child. His twenty-two years appeared as seventeen; he was serious, he did not seem to know there was a being on earth called woman. […] Before anything but the Republic, he chastely dropped his eyes. He was the marble lover of liberty. […] Had any grisette of the Place Cambrai or the Rue Saint Jean-de-Beauvais, seeing this college boy’s face, the body of a page, long fair lashes, blue eyes, that hair flying in the wind, rosy cheeks, pure lips, exquisite teeth, felt a desire to taste all this dawn, and tried her beauty on Enjolras, a surprising and terrible look would have suddenly shown her the great gulf, and taught her not to confuse Beaumarchais’ dashing cherubino with this fearsome cherubim of Ezekiel. “Two at one shot,” he said.
And, turning to Enjolras gently, he said, “Will you permit it?”
Enjolras shook his hand with a smile.
The smile was not finished before the report was heard.
Enjolras, pierced by eight bullets, remained backed up against the wall as if the bullets had nailed him there. Except that his head was tilted.
Grantaire, struck down, collapsed at his feet.

"Enjolras –" the corners of Grantaire's mouth twitched briefly into a small, fond smile, despite himself, "– that is not how this particular social dance is done. No wonder you stand out so. Allow me to offer my services in blending into this particular theatre of battle."

"Will this lesson take long?" came Enjolras's dry response.

"That depends on the speed with which the pupil grasps what is being taught."

Such were the text messages that preceded Éponine holding Grantaire’s hair back from his forehead as he vomited viciously into the toilet. He still hadn’t told her what was going on – he hadn’t been able to catch a breath between pukes to do so. But one look at his pallid face sufficed to tell her that it had to do with a certain golden-haired Apollo.

    Summary

With a heroic effort, Grantaire managed to wrench his mouth away from Éponine’s, even as her hands started taking liberties that made his vision go white with desire.

“Ép,” he choked. “W-what are you—” his weak attempt at a protest broke off into a hiss as her hands grew more persistent.

“Let’s forget it all ’Taire,” Éponine rasped. Her lips were at his neck now, and her hot breath ghosted over his skin as he spoke. “Let’s just block it all out. I’ll be your one-night stand tonight.”

So that was it. That was what she wanted.

And honestly, with her on top of him like this, it was hard not to want that too. She was grappling with his belt buckle now, and it would be so easy, so easy to let her...

But she wasn’t his one-night stand.

She was Éponine. His best friend. The person he cared about most in the world.

*Re: the "non-con" archive warning, that's because Éponine really aggressively comes onto Grantaire without establishing consent. She’s super horrified/apologetic when she realizes he doesn’t actually want it, and that she just assaulted her best friend… He’s okay and extremely forgiving... but yah, trigger warning for that plot point.

Both died at the barricades, caring nothing for the cause. Caring only for one who had never cared back. One who had never even looked their way.
What if they were given a second chance at life? What if, in that life, they found each other? Could they care for each other, instead? Could they live for each other, rather than die for an idol?

*Re: Rating, I used Mature to be on the safe side, but I think it's probably closer to what most people would rate as Teen. There's no sexually graphic/titillating content, which I think is what the Mature rating is used for most often - but there are some pretty heavy/mature themes. Please see notes at the beginning of the work for more details/trigger warnings.

*I'm using relationship tags loosely. E.g. Enjolras/Grantaire and Marius/Éponine are for one-sided infatuations. Montparnasse/Éponine is for a weird abusive relationship-ish thing. The central relationship is the Grantaire & Éponine friendship.

    Summary

Enjolras sounds so formal, stiff and slightly awkward as he hovers at Grantaire’s shoulder, that Grantaire can’t help but mimic his tone.

“Enjolras. I was just,” he glances at the half empty bottle in front of him, “I’m sure it’s perfectly clear what I was doing. Have you come to join me?”

He half intends it to be a joke. He expects Enjolras to roll his eyes or for the lines of his forehead to show some small sign of exasperation, but instead he nods.
