Yusuf does not turn around at the sound of Sébastien’s voice, but he allows his shoulders to relax for what feels like the first time in months. He hasn’t had a single moment for himself since he set foot on this cursed island, and today... today he’s supposed to marry a complete stranger in order to finally put an end to a senseless war started by angry old men when Yusuf was but a baby at his mother’s breast.
“I am pleased that all parties have agreed to the treaty, of course,” Yusuf says, his voice so purposely solemn that Sébastien cracks a lopsided smile and bumps playfully against his shoulder. “I just wish there was another way.”
Mahdia was victorious but barely, and to secure that tenuous peace, the kingdoms of the Long Sea came together to marry King Ibrahim’s remaining living son and Regent, Yusuf, to a member of Genoa’s royal family.
The only problem is: there were no daughters available.

“Why did you…” He pauses, trying to find the words. He thinks of the newest resident in the hospital, the man with the wild curls and the sparks behind his eyes. He thinks of the way the man had moved like a dancer, the way his lips had snarled beneath that full beard. The way he’d fought and fought and fought. And the way they’d put him down. “Why did you put the fire out?”
Dr. Copley takes a while to answer. “Fires are dangerous,” he says slowly.
Nicky frowns. “Only if you’re afraid,” he whispers. He turns, tilting his head. “Are you afraid, Dr. Copley?”
Yusuf al-Kaysani has had many names. He’s lived more lives and has seen more sunrises than any other man. He’s outlived languages, seen the rise and fall of civilizations, and has walked beside death, always one step ahead. He knows who he is.
However, after waking up in an unknown facility in London, Joe is forced to question his entire existence. What had started as a poorly constructed nightmare now weaves thick tendrils through his thoughts, suffocating him until he can’t even trust his own mind.
He knows who he is.
But what if he doesn’t?
