    Summary

Crozier foolishly believed that the first Magpie case he was consulted on would be solved by the time supper was ready. He swept into Sir John Barrow’s opulent home, been directed to the man’s private collection, observed the empty space where prized swords once hung, the letter pinned in their place, the feather that had fallen to the floor.
“You’re not looking for a magpie, gentleman,” he announced in that tone which had prevented his advancement at Scotland Yard ) as he held the feather between his thumb and forefinger. “You’re looking for a peacock.”

The Magpie, dashing gentleman thief, has been running rampant all over London, robbing society of their treasures and delighting the masses with his daring and charm.

Private Detective Francis Crozier intends to stop him.

“What could have made your attention wander my way, my noble Royal Marine?” James asked in the breathless voice. He flicked open his fan with a satisfying crack, the marine snorting in amusement when James fluttered it by his face.

    Summary

An electively mute genderqueer James Fitzjames is sold by his benefactor into marriage to a former sea captain, Sir John Franklin, now a New Zealand frontiersman, bringing his young son Jonathan-Irving with him. James has not spoken a word since he was six and he expresses himself through his piano playing and through sign language, for which his son, in parent-child role reversal, has served as his interpreter.

In New Zealand, James' precious piano is sold by Franklin to his friend of Irish extract, a fellow forester and former sea captain, Francis Crozier in exchange for more land. Determined to regain his piano, James enters into an arrangement proposed by Francis in which he can earn his piano back at a rate of one piano key per piano lesson, provided that he can observe him and do "things he likes" while he plays. The "lessons" with Francis become a slow seduction for his affection, with Francis soon requesting increased intimacy in exchange for greater numbers of keys...

    Summary

The bones of James’ face were always thrown into relief by a certain type of light, and he had retained his health well enough over the past year or two that it no longer gave him the appearance of wasting away. James simply looked tired. His body had been put through so much over its forty-seven years that his dutiful hard work often resulted in a period of thorough exhaustion that might last a week or a day, it was up to the deciding hand of Fate.

James almost tripped as he ascended the stairs, his long legs carrying him ponderously upwards rather than taking the steps at his usual sprightly pace. He stopped a stair below where Francis stood, his hand holding onto the banister like he needed the support, and gave him a wan smile. “Been rather a long day, Francis.”

I thought you said nothing too fancy, James? Not that Francis was complaining, although he was feeling immensely under-dressed and inadequate.

“I will take your speechlessness as a good sign,” James said. He gave Francis a sly smile and Francis felt like he was going to lose his balance.

    “Yes, James.” Yes. Fuck yes.

    Summary

He whistles at the gussied up young man as he glides by. The man turns, looking startled at first, large dark eyes in a long face framed with neat bouncing ringlets. Very handsome, Tozer affirms, and dares to wink.

“Miss,” he gives a little nod of his head, as he has seen men greet proper young ladies.

“I say, Jas,” one of the other officers squawks, “I do believe that marine is giving you the eye. He must be after your virtue, old girl!”

“My good fortune that I have you to protect me, Dundy.” The man in a dress - or lady in boots - snaps open a black lace fan and holds it up to his rouged face, flashing wicked black eyes at Tozer one last time before the revellers have passed on their way.

Tozer is bored and horny on guard duty in Portsmouth dockyard. Fitzjames is out on the lash with the lads in his finest scarlet silk dress.

“I don’t think there are coconuts in Ibiza,” Francis muttered, looking over the mess of macaroons. He wiped his forehead with the back of his hand, Cornelius eyeing him from the counter. “Don’t even consider it. These are not for cats, and if they were, they would not be for ones who bite.” Cornelius meowed and began washing himself.
