“Whose side are you on?” Shiro asks at night, staring at a spot on the ceiling.
Keith shifts in bed and weighs his options, but falls asleep before he can finish deliberating. There are, obviously, better things to believe in.
On this Earth, they're fighting a different war.
It's your choice, Shiro had said, leaning against their rickety window frame with his arms crossed. Outside, the summer painted itself into the granite cliffs, a long, slow fade, and the dying light left little room for regret.
So Keith had chosen, and never looked back.
In which Shiro and Keith face a life of normality, and all the days that come after that.
For a moment Keith considers just punching him in the shoulder, rolling away, and burying himself under the blankets—but Shiro is still smiling softly, and his eyelashes are casting shadows along his sharp cheekbones, and Keith is weak in some ways.
“So. There was—a castle.”
Keith tells Shiro a bedtime story.
