"I haven't had a lot of fun the past few months. As for sex, it's not been top of my list of priorities. I haven't...since...in fact... I don't feel very—"
"—Well, you are." Stuart put his hand on Tom's thigh, trying to sense the damage through the fabric. "It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be us—you and me. It could be fun, couldn't it, you and me?”

Can we really quantify knowledge? And What is History Anyway? by shadowkat67

Summary
The answer to the first question, I think is "no", we can't quantify how much people know although I'm certain numerous professionals in the field will argue that point. One being an old ex-college friend, that I lost touch with two years back, whose job was partly to do just that -- quantify how much others learned or rather devise a method of figuring it out. We used to have arguments regarding how it was possible for someone who'd never taught to determine whether others were being taught, whether they'd learned, and what the best method was for determining that. Standardized tests? Portfolios of the students work? Oral examinations? Is person A brighter than B just because they happen to be able to figure out a word problem in five minutes flat? Or is B brighter because they can analyze a poem and understand it? The second question is no easier to answer, and arose twice for me this week, once in a book and now again in the movie I saw tonight, The History Boys - which poses both questions and does not exactly answer either. Just as it poses many other questions, some that make you squirm a bit with discomfort.

Love, friendship and the trials of soul marks are never easy to navigate. At eighteen, a name on your forearm can make the world all the more a painful and confusing place.

Donald Scripps has always been different. Always felt different. It's not been easy hiding it from his best mates (especially David) They've all been through enough without him adding onto anything. And then said best mate calls him up, asking for his help on a case.

Summary
Scripps: You can't explain away the poetry, sir.
Lockwood: No, sir. Art wins in the end.Scripps doesn't remember what he said in response--something deceptively pithy about the vicar, likely--but he does remember how Jimmy looked back at him, unguarded despite his casual blasphemy. His hair, so dark in the few photographs that remain, shone that day, the sunlight pulling out all the colors that the cameras flattened, and his eyes were bright with the mirth of a soldier who knows joy is fleeting and so must be celebrated each second it appears.
In which Scripps is an echo of Siegfried Sassoon and James Lockwood is an echo of Wilfred Owen.

Summary
They stopped at the lights—riding a frustrating, red wave. Tom drummed his fingers as though it might speed things along while a man carried a Christmas tree across the road, and a small boy ran behind, patting the trunk. Tom laughed, “He’s not really pulling his weight, is he?” he said, and Stuart grunted, “He’s doing his best”.
In which our boys face the future and conclude it's best done together—for better or worse.

Summary
“And here I thought you didn’t care for her,” Scripps says with a smirk as he taps the spine of Pos’s copy of Pride and Prejudice before sitting down at the piano in Hector’s classroom.
As Scrips fiddles with the sheet music on the piano, he notices the amused eye roll Pos sends his way. The younger boy looks almost too pleased with himself as he quotes, “Come now. The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.”
“Alright,” Scripps says, throwing up his arms in mock surrender, earning a rare, small laugh from his classmate. Trying to keep up the rapport, Scripps places a hand on his chin and eyes Pos, “Still, she seems a bit—”
“Distressingly heterosexual? Yes,” Posner says with a resolute flippancy in his voice. He gingerly closes the book and sets it down with a distant smile on his face. “But it’s about the yearning, Scrippsy, don’t you understand?”
Four interconnected Friends-to-Lovers Scosner drabbles in which Scripps and Posner utilize Jane Austen quotations in life, loss, and love as they navigate their relationship at Cutler's, university, and beyond.
