Bat is still new to being a werewolf and thus he is also still new to being an alpha. That the Shadow World came with secondary genders was just confusing to the poor guy.
But when he meets Jace, when they all band together to save Simon from the Seelie Queen, he understands, for the first time, what all the fuss about omegas was. Jace smelt devine and he looked like an angel.
Jace is mainly confused and frustrated by the alpha's attention. He long-since gave up on finding an actual mate, because he doesn't believe in love. Or, more precisely, he doesn't believe in love for himself.
