He’s clever, they always said, which really meant don’t trust him. But when Claude pieced apart his walls to let someone inside they were always surprised to find that he wasn’t the snake they’d been expecting. He was ambitious, of course, but ambition in the hands of good men is a blessing, not a curse. And when he described the tenets of his vision for the future it was easy to believe that clever was simply a synonym for kind.
