Après la folle aventure de la malédiction aztèque, James Norrington pensait pouvoir retourner à un quotidien plus tranquille de simple Commodore, à chasser paisiblement Sparrow autour des sept mers. Il comptait bien rester à l'écart des ennuis de type magique et surtout du couple Turner-Swann enthousiasmé par leur mariage prochain.
